My six-year-old daughter began paying violin a little under three months ago in a classroom setting. They are learning primarily from the Essential Elements 2000 for Strings book in class, and are about halfway through the book. I say this as a point of reference, because when I read these reviews and people say they are beginning violinists, I wonder what 'beginning' really means.I bought this particular book because my daughter is so very fond of Christmas music, and it is -- of course -- the proper season. She is a diligent student, and I want to be sure practice stays interesting and fun for her.Overall, it's been a fairly good choice for a beginning violinist. It's not laid out in the easy format of the songs in the first half of her Essential Elements book where the arrangements have been simplified for beginning readers of music. Some of the songs in this book are quite difficult for our current level of skill. Others, like Jingle Bells, can be worked out between the two of us (I'm learning violin alongside her, so as to make it easier for her to learn). But it does take some work, and assistance from mom because she gets easily frustrated with dual task of reading more complex musical notes and playing simultaneously.Because I too am playing the violin, it's worth noting that there are two violin parts -- so once we are better at playing the violin, we could perhaps play a duet. Right now we just struggle with synchronizing our melodies. There is also a separate booklet with piano accompaniment for each song -- a nice touch.
