Notes From The Internet Apocalypse: A Novel (The Internet Apocalypse Trilogy)

When the Internet suddenly stops working, society reels from the loss of flowing data and streaming entertainment. Addicts wander the streets talking to themselves in 140 characters or forcing cats to perform tricks for their amusement, while the truly desperate pin their requests for casual encounters on public bulletin boards. The economy tumbles and the government passes the draconian NET Recovery Act.For Gladstone, the Net's disappearance comes particularly hard, following the loss of his wife, leaving his flask of Jamesons and grandfather's fedora as the only comforts in his Brooklyn apartment. But there are rumors that someone in New York is still online. Someone set apart from this new world where Facebook flirters "poke" each other in real life and members of Anonymous trade memes at secret parties. Where a former librarian can sell information as a human search engine and the perverted fulfill their secret fetishes at the blossoming Rule 34 club. With the help of his friends---a blogger and a webcam girl, both now out of work---Gladstone sets off to find the Internet. But is he the right man to save humanity from this Apocalypse? For those of you wondering if you have WiFi right now, Wayne Gladstone's Notes from the Internet Apocalypse examines the question "What is life without the Web?"

I'm an avid reader of "Cracked," a website that's both informative and hilarious, brimming with sarcasm and holding no subject sacred when it comes to investigation and/or mockery. It has some talented writers among its staff, and said staff has gone on to put out several "real-world" books -- "You Might Be a Zombie and Other Bad News," "How To Fight Presidents," and "John Dies at the End" and its sequel "This Book Is Full of Spiders," among others. "John Dies at the End" is on my to-read list, but I happened across a mention of "Notes from the Internet Apocalypse" on the Cracked website and was intrigued by its description. It looked to be a hilarious read, and so I was able to talk my local library into purchasing a copy. (I prefer to read a book from the library before I purchase it for real, because I'm not paying for a book unless I'm sure I'm going to read it more than once.)Unfortunately, "Notes from the Internet Apocalypse" is not a book I'm going to re-read. It has moments of brilliance and an interesting premise, but at its heart it's a confused and mean-spirited mess that's way too smug for its own good. The titular Internet Apocalypse is a simple but devastating disaster -- one day the Internet simply quits working. Soon the effects of this technological disaster are felt all over the world -- the economy is in ruins, the US government starts the Net Recovery Act and turns New York City into a police state, and Internet-addicted "zombies" roam the streets, struggling to recreate their favorite websites in the real world. At the heart of this mess is unemployed widower Gladstone (yes, named after the author), who is keeping a journal of events that he hopes to post online should the Internet ever come back.
