I am an intermediate Spanish language student and I bought this book in order to organize some "film nights" with several fellow students. To that end, this book has served as a superb resource. It offers a diverse selection of Spanish language films from Spanish-speaking countries around the globe (most of which I have been able to find in my local library, and definitely at the local "art" video store). This provides a wide range of dialects and accents for listening comprehension. The films selected in the book range from comedies to serious histories and dramas, offering fascinating insights into different cultures, while providing excellent entertainment. (Some films here will be old chestnuts to serious film buffs, but I also found a few new gems!) The book offers film synopses, specialized vocabulary, and then several types of follow-up exercises, ranging from simple matching and fill-in-the-blanks, to more detailed "essay" questions which are a terrific launching pad for group discussions. All-in-all this book is well thouight-out, well designed, intelligent and REALLY interesting, all high selling points for anyone trying to learn a language. I HIGHLY recommend this book for both independent intermediate Spanish students and ALL Spanish instructors (and libraries!!!).
This book has vocabulary lists, worksheets, pre-watching activities, and topics for conversation or writing. It also has movies representing a good mix of Spanish speaking countries, so that users of the materials are exposed to a variety of dialects and accents. It is a great resource for a Spanish teacher, although my one complaint is that the majority of movies are rated R or NR, so it's much less useful as a supplement to high school curriculum. Based on the vocabulary and grammatical structures used in the activities, I would recommend this for intermediate to advanced level speakers/students.
.......because many of the movies are rated R, it cannot be used much for high school level students. I teach upper levels (Advanced Placement) and there are only a few movies in here that we can use. That being said, the exercises and vocabulary lists are excellent and the readings and activities are perfect for the students. My only advice on the next edition would be to add in a few more PG13 movies or Rated R movies without nudity.
While this book can recommend several movies in Spanish and has questions to start conversations, along with great vocabulary lists, it never really takes off as a complete and comprehensive guide for building conversational Spanish skills. It could more be used as a second book, which at its high price and continuous revisions, is not worth it to most Spanish students/teachers.
For the foreign language teacher, this is a GREAT find! Gives good activities and exercises for students to complete before, during and after watching these acclaimed Spanish films. It's appropriate for all high school levels, as well as college. There are more than enough activities that you can be pretty selective in what you choose to do/assign. It includes everything from vocabulary lists to research topics. The major flaw: most of the films are not rated or are rated R. Thus, it is worth ensuring that there is a film you CAN (and want to) show to your class before purchasing this book. I'd recommend looking into 'Volver' as it's a great film by Almodóvar, though it is rated R. La Misma Luna is a good one that is for younger students (PG-13).
I love this book! I am a Spanish major at the university and I used this book in an independent to help me understand some of the issues facing Latin America. Watching the movies helped me improve my Spanish comprehension. The activities in the book helped me understand the movies and social issues in Latin America. This book presents a variety of movies from Spain, the Caribbean, Central and South America, so you get to hear a number of different dialects. I really feel I grew in my knowledge and appreciation of Latin America.
This is a wonderful book. It includes a lot of vocabulary and practice exercises which help to learn language easier. I really love this book because learning with this book is really fun. Thank you
As the preface claims, movies appeal to students of all ages. What better way to increase vocabulary, learn about the culture, hear different accents, than to watch foreign films? Teaching as I do at a college where we have lots of film majors, teaching a language through film is a great way to engage and motivate students. This text offers good excersises for pre and post viewing. It helps students learn how to analyse films, provides the vocabulary they will need to know and offers topics to discuss. It offers sixteen films to explore from a number of Spanish-speaking countries. I recommend it highly.
