Making The Scene: Nashville - How To Live, Network, And Succeed In Music City

(Book). Nashville may be considered the epicenter of country music, but today, this thriving music industry town is home to a diverse array of musicians and musical styles. Combine that musical community with a "livable" town that's more friendly and affordable than some coastal music cities, and it's no wonder that musicians continue to flock to Nashville to play, write, record, produce, and live otherwise fulfilling lives. Getting acquainted with any new city is a challenge. For musicians, picking up and moving presents a whole host of challenges. Musicians make noise and thrive on working with other musicians, whether playing in rehearsal spaces or gigging. They need spaces where they can create, record, and hang out with other musicians. They need to know where to play, where to buy gear, where to meet other musicians, where to see live music, and where to network and exchange ideas with other musicians. Making the Scene: Nashville will serve as a comprehensive guide for musicians and artists of all types looking to move to and establish themselves in Nashville, Tennessee. Sprinkled with historical references on how Nashville became the home of country music along with interviews from a wide range of music professionals and resources, this book will become a prime resource helping artists and others meet the challenges of moving to Music City USA Nashville, Tennessee.

This book is comprehensive, detailed, and full of valuable insight for any songwriter or musician who is interested in working in Nashville. It provides realistic, common-sense knowledge that is as helpful as it is fun to read. This book outlines not only how the "real" industry works, but also contains basic information for every-day life in Music City, from what neighborhoods to check out to where to grab lunch or get a haircut. After reading Making the Scene, I feel much more focused, realistic, and prepared to jump into the Nashville industry. I am keeping my copy so that I can use it as a quick reference guide when I need it.If you're thinking about moving to Nashville as a songwriter or musician, or you already live there and need some help to get more comfortable and develop a better focus, this book is an absolute must-have.

As a songwriter I'm planning on moving to Nashville in the next few months so I bought a few books about Nashville and found this book to be helpful in a few areas. The interviews are probably the best part of the book especially the ones with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. There is also an interview with the host of a weekly open mic writers night that was not only informative but it will most likely be the first place I go when I get to Nashville to network and possibly play. As other reviewers have noted there is a lot of informational stuff that breaks up the flow of the book but what is apparent is that this is a first hand account from someone who has a pretty good understanding of how Nashville works and how to make the most of it as a songwriter. I also thought the interviews in the book with songwriters who have moved to Nashville from other parts of the country and are trying to make it was helpful but I wish there were more of those because as we all know we can always learn from the mistakes of others.

I found this book to be very helpful. It delivers a no nonsense approach to Nashville for the singer/songwriter. In the new modern way of accessing information this book offers up a clean path and the interviews with the Vice Presidents of major music organizations has come in handy, for me at least. This book was obviously written by a person who knows how the music scene in Nashville works. The style and tone of the book comes across as if I was sitting with the writer telling me a story about what to do and the roadblocks that often get in the way of the creative process in Nashville. If you are thinking of moving to Nashville as a singer/songwriter this book should be your guide map. There are other books out there about Nashville for singer/songwriters and we all know that it is hard to live life on our own terms. We are creative’s not everybody gets that but there is such an intimacy and passion about this book that the others don’t compare. On a final note, I actually contacted the Author by email and he got back to me. Who does that! He gave me more advice and said “I will always be here for you if you need further guidance in your music career.” This book and Author are a true treasure.

This book is more geared to aspiring musicians but I am looking at moving to Nashville for businesses other than music and I found this book very helpful as well. Great read!!

I was in Nashville a couple months ago walking Broadway and bought this book from one of the touristy stores. This is a fantastic guide to understanding the city of Nashville from a musician's perspective. Liam gives great tips on venues to check out, neighborhoods to live in, restaurant and bars to frequent and even where to buy a mattress. He also interviews some big players in town about their tips on how to break into Nashville. Especially loved the interview with the owner of the legendary Bluebird Cafe.I learned a lot about how The Music City runs and I highly recommend this
to every songwriter looking to make the move.

This is a neat, user-friendly guide by someone who's "been there, done that" - a real Nashville insider. I think it'sa helpful resource for anyone visiting Nashville or trying to break into the music scene. From getting gigs togetting great food, it's all here.
