A revolutionary design, the BMP marked a significant departure from the traditional armoured personnel carrier, with a lower silhouette and heavier armament than rival APCs. One of the most fearsome light-armoured vehicles of its day, it caused great consternation on the other side of the Iron Curtain as the Americans scrambled to design a machine to rival the BMP. The result was the M2/M3 Bradley. These Cold War icons first clashed – not on the plains of Europe, but in southern Iraq during the Gulf War of 1991. In the course of the Cold War, the Soviet Union early developed an innovative infantry fighting vehicle, the BMP. The BMP was considered revolutionary for its time, incorporating the ability to ferry troops around the battlefield while also being an effective weapons system. It wasn't until well after Vietnam that the U.S. Army fielded a comparable system, the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle or IFV. The two systems finally went head to head in Operation Desert Storm in 1991."Bradley vs. BMP: Desert Storm 1991" is an Osprey Duel Series book, incorporating a nice technical comparison of the M2/M3 Bradley and the BMP 1 and 2, and their respective crews. The heart of the narrative is the match-up between the U.S. 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the Iraqi Tawakalna Division in the Battle of 73 Easting, deep inside southern Iraq. An analysis of the match-up gives credit where credit is due on both sides, while toting up the numbers. The text is supported by a nice selection of period photographs, illustrations, and diagrams. It's a good concise read on the topic for the student of armored warfare and the general reader. Recommended.
A solid book on the capabilities of both of these combat vehicles. As a veteran of the battles at 73 Easting and Norfolk I got to experience some of these actions first hand. The book provides some good photos I have not seen in other similar publications. The book provides a lot of first hand accounts from the 2nd ACR and mentions the other units belonging to 7th Corps whom dealt the Iraqi Army and Republican Guard their most decisive defeats. I was happy to see the roving Iraqi anti tank teams get a mention in this book as well.
A lot of good information about the Bardley and the BMP. A great format for quick information.
Another fine book in the Duel series
Good over view on the two vehicle in the book. I would recommend it as a starter on getting to know them.
