I have in front of me this Spanish translation of Simeon's French original from 1885; the translation was first published in 1977; mine is the 6th edition from 1988 ("Siglo Veintiuno", from Mexico City).Let me quote an entry from this book, and then the corresponding entry from Ms. Frances Karttunen's "Analytical Dictionary of Nahuatl" (Austin : U of Texas, 1983; re-issued by the U of Oklahoma Press in 1992):Here is the Simeon entry for "cihuapilli":ciuapilli s. Dama, mujer legit'ima de un gran personaje; "uei ciuapilli" gran, noble dama, reina; "ciuapille" !o dama! Pl. "ciuapipiltin", matronas, mujeres muertas en su primer parto, consideradas como diosas (Sah[agun]). En comp. "teciuapil" la senyora de alguien. R. ciuatl, pilli[note that I have had to resort to use of prefixed "'" to represent the Sp. accent,"ny" to represent the "n" with tilde, and don't have an upside down exclamation mark on this machine. Otherwise the entry is the way it appears in the book.]Here is Ms. Karttunen's entry:CIHUA#PIL-LI pl. -PI#PIPILTIN lady / senyora or duenya (M[olina]) See CIHUA#-TL, PIL-LI.[here I have used # to indicate a long vowel, as Ms. Karttunen usefully and uniquely does throughout her work]The entries are both typical. Ms. Karttunen indicates vowel length and the presence of saltillo (glottal stop, or, latterly, a pharyngeal comparable to English "h"). Simeon doesn't supply this information.Otherwise, the student of Nahuatl will find far more Nahuatl in Simeon, both in point of examples (the life of a dictionary, really) and in point of range of sources; Simeon drew his words from the principal works of Classical Nahuatl, most notably the astonishing Sahagun, as well as the lexicographers such as Molina; Ms.
