In our daily lives, as we scurry through our routines, appointments and the like, no element of this journey from engagement to engagement is as important (and often forgotten) than equality of access. The ADA Companion Guide: Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) by Marcela Abadi Rhoads, AIA, RAS reminds us of the importance of this civil rights legislation and its place in our contemporary society. The text is organized to both acknowledge the history of what I will refer to as the "evolving ADA" as well as offer brief explanations section by section of both the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA.) Items often misunderstood are adeptly addressed with original commentary and illustration. Referring to the historical section provided in the Companion Guide, the author explains The U.S. Access Board's guidelines issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) have been completely updated and the implications for the built environment. Note: The ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) cover the construction and alteration of facilities in the private and public sectors. And, the accessibility guidelines issued under the ABA address facilities in the federal sector. The umbrella of access defined by these documents include the applicable technical criteria taken point by point by the author in their current organizational format for ease of reference. Notably, the commentary and organization of the author allows for a holistic understanding of a particular element including original diagrams, photographs and illustrations of key elements and circumstances.
