The goal of the editors does not appear to have been to present the most difficult coloratura soprano pieces, but to set out a range of music that the student and instructor could use in order to develop flexibility in the voice. Well done!
This is a fantastic book for the genuine coloratura soprano, as well as offering a good selection for light lyrics who are looking to increase their agility and move into the coloratura repertoire. While offering a few easier selections, such as "Poor Wand'ring One," many of these arias are very challenging and should definitely not be undertaken by the beginning singer. It is great to have these blockbuster soprano arias all in one place!
An amateur soprano with an interest in opera, I was first introduced to this series through the Soprano Arias book. However, that book had only a few arias that I was familiar with. This Coloratura Aria set has many famous arias, such as the Queen of the Night's aria from the Magic Flute, Olympia's from Tales of Hoffman, etc. There is a wide variety of languages, including, English, German, French, and Italian. Every aria is translated in the beginning, rather than underneath the original text, preserving the composer's intent. Moreover, this book presents the challenging arias in a way that makes them more accessible to those of us who may not be professional opera singers. Many of the songs have two options for the ending--either the easier, simple ending, or the more difficult (and often higher) standard cadenza. Most of the songs go up to at least two octaves above middle C, and some even go up to that high F. However, I highly recommend this book for any opera enthusiast or soprano student looking to develop her range.
These anthologies are just beyond wonderful. They have a brilliant selection of songs and the piano part is easy to follow if you wish to play and sing at the same time. The translations in the front of the book are clear, and while not underneath the other text in the actual songs, is easily written in if so desired.
How do I love Robert Larsen's anthologies? Let me count the ways. Well...I won't bore you. Just buy this. It is so worth the price for the excellent presentation, piano transcriptions, translations and extras.
This provides arias for medium or advanced students in their practice and beginning students or young voices should probably shy away from pushing their voices to attempt these arias until some maturity has developed through experience and time (unless your vocal coach or teacher feels you can manage without damaging your vocal folds). The arias in this book are a great compilation of some of the best and popular coloratura arias for sopranos. It was really cool to have them all located in one book. They really did a great job. I also purchased the accompaniment CD separately to use with these arias.
This is a great vocal book for high coloratura singers. I would hesitate to give most of these songs to students under 18 years of age, unless many years of high singing have been in their background. Overall, fabulous book, and great selections.
Excellent product, exactly as advertised and in perfect condition. Schirmer series are well-known and top quality, so the provenance of this item was not in question. The style and condition of the book itself are as expected, and it arrived quite speedily -- several days sooner than promised. I was pleased with the transaction from start to finish.
