Biblical Geography And History (Illustrated)

Geography has within the past few years won a new place among the sciences. It is no longer regarded as simply a description of the earth's surface, but as the foundation of all historical study. Only in the light of their physical setting can the great characters, movements, and events of human history be rightly understood and appreciated. Moreover, geography is now defined as a description not only of the earth and of its influence upon man's development, but also of the solar, atmospheric, and geological forces which throughout millions of years have given the earth its present form. Hence, in its deeper meaning, geography is a description of the divine character and purpose expressing itself through natural forces, in the physical contour of the earth, in the animate world, and, above all, in the life and activities of man. Biblical geography, therefore, is the first and in many ways the most important chapter in that divine revelation which was perfected through the Hebrew race and recorded in the Bible. Thus interpreted it has a profound religious meaning, for through the plains and mountains, the rivers and seas, the climate and flora of the biblical world the Almighty spoke to men as plainly and unmistakably as he did through the voices of his inspired seers and sages. No other commentary upon the literature of the Bible is so practical and luminous as biblical geography. Throughout their long history the Hebrews were keenly attentive to the voice of the Eternal speaking to them through nature. Their writings abound in references and figures taken from the picturesque scenes and peculiar life of Palestine. The grim encircling desert, the strange water-courses, losing themselves at times in their rocky beds, fertile Carmel and snow-clad Hermon, the resounding sea and the storm-lashed waters of Galilee are but a few of the many physical characteristics of Palestine that have left their indelible marks upon the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. The same is true of Israel's unique faith and institutions. Biblical geography, therefore, is not a study by itself, but the natural introduction to all other biblical studies. It is a pleasure to publish this new, high quality, and affordable edition of this timeless book.

I was looking for more geography and less history. I found more description and not as much illustration to show me where each of the areas were. I would not recommend this book if the person is looking for maps and illustrations.

The Kindle version of this book has only one illustration plate, a small scale depiction of North Africa and the Middle East. With no graphics to illustrate the discussion details, this reads very much like the driest lecture to which you were ever subjected; words, words, words, and no illustrations. Ho-hum.

As a student of Biblical Hebrew I found this book enthralling. I had purchased earlier a book on Bible maps now and then. You could look at all the maps you like, what this book does for one is give you the geography and history complete with political and economic insight to the surrounding players. I cannot get enough of this...

In these times it is important to habe a biblical concordance and a biblical atles to understand biblical prophecy. This little books helps a lot. I recommend it if one wishes to know what's what, who's who, where's where and why's why. Put on the WHOLE armorer. May God richly bless you.

An older book with descriptions of places that were visited when closer to what they looked like in ancient times. Clear geographical descriptions linked with historical events in the locations described. A great aide to read before or after visiting Israel and Jordan.

Very general information for the most part, but some gems can be gleaned. I bought this as a Kindle version--mistake. Virtually no illustrations. Not a waste of money at the $1 Kindle price, but if you're looking for in depth info, maps, etc., you will be disappointed.

As I have the kindle version of this book it has been very convenient for me to "pop" it open between and betwixt those things I do. I've not finished the book, but so far I have found it interesting.

As usual with Kindle books. The "sample" that you are sent, shows nothing at all about the information that is actually in the book. And as with all Kindle books, you can't return it when it falls wildly short of your needs. Don't buy this. There is a reason its priced so cheap. Because It's useless in this format. Go buy a real book, with maps, in a real bookstore where you can review it and see if it actually contains the information you need.
