Wow. I have an edition of this on my bookshelf that once belonged to my grandmother, who died in 1927, when my father was only four. I used to love reading and memorizing these poems... Out to Old Aunt Mary's and Little Boy Blue made me cry every time. I'd gather all the neighborhood children in the back of my Dad's truck camper in the 1960s and read, with great, dark drama, "I... have a renn-dezz-vooz with DEATH!" I'm sure all my old pals have strong feelings about poetry to this day!Now I have learned how properly to pronounce "rendezvous," but I've lost my audience, so now I read the book to myself just for the enjoyment of those wonderful thoughts so beautifully crafted. My dad had a poem to recite for any occasion. I'm sure that when he was a child, he, too, found his mother's book and began memorizing.I suggest you buy a copy to put on your shelf where your own 8 year olds can find it. You might just hear them reading it to their own friends in great dramatic fashion. Great poetry is timeless.
This is an old anthology which I have read and treasured since I was a child. I don't know where the volume I fell in love with came from, only that it was very old, and barely holding together at the time and a great deal of the authors were still alive at the time. I was ecstatic to find a new paperback edition when I was in my early twenties and now I am replacing it with a hardback edition. I love every poem in there and believe that this one book began a lifelong love of poetry that continues now and in the future. You simply cannot go wrong in purchasing this book if you have a love for poetry or simply a new interest in it. It will start you on a rewarding reading pleasure no matter how vague your interest. The price is right, the material is priceless. Happy reading.
My father had an old copy of this book that he read as a child. He loved to read his favorites from this book, or simply recite them from memory. They are classic rhyming poems. Another favorite book of mine is "Poetry for a Lifetime", a beautiful volume which includes a number of these poems, including "Plant a Tree" and "Home". It has a much larger number of poems and is illustrated and has comments from the editor. I highly recommend both books.
Some of my fondest childhood memories were created when my father read various poems from this book to me instead of Grimm's fairy tales. the experiences have instilled a tremendous love of the arts and poetry because of this experience. Poems such as, 'the Duel', 'Little Boy Blue', 'Trees', 'the Children's Hour' tell such great and fun stories that every library, young and old, should have this. It's also been a favorite gift for years.
My Dad was old-fashioned. He quoted poetry a lot. In the car,by the campfire, at almost any excuse. He gave me this book formy 12th birthday. It is full of favorites, many of which Imemorized. I have written poetry and song lyrics. I value poetry, andsome of the richest connections I have to my Dad are throughpoetry. If you're a parent...why not give this book to your kids?"By the shores of Gitchee Goomie" (spelling is wrong I'm sure)"I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree""Just before Christmas I'm as Good as I can Be""Four Score and Seven Years Ago""Quoth the Raven, Nevermore""O Captain, My Captain""Out to Old Aunt Mary's""The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat""I wandered lonely as a cloud" They are timeless classics. If you don't feed your kidsmind with good stuff, it will all be television pap. The choice is yours. Be like my Dad and set a good example.I don't have any kids, but I've given this to my neice. She graduated in the top of her class last year.
I first became acquainted with this slim volume in seventh grade when I asked my teacher where she found the poetry that we were to memorize. That was in 1942 and it was an "old" collection then. I borrowed my teacher's book and was introduced to a whole world of philosophy in an art form. I soon acquired my own copy and it has never been far from my reach. I can always find something new and rewarding when I open this volume. Times change; needs change; viewpoints change; yet the selections presented seem forever applicable to our society. There is always a place for beauty and serenity and this volume is the place I most frequently find it. This collection is number one on my list of what to give someone special. I am ordering it now for my granddaughter's first grade teacher.
101 Famous Poems is a book that I come to time and time again to read aloud and memorize great poetry. I was never very interested in poetry until one of my siblings made the comment, "Poe's 'The Raven' still creeps me out." and then, I just HAD to read 'The Raven'. And guess what? now I can hardly keep my nose out of this book! The collection of famous speeches and poems in 101 Famous Poems is unlike any other that I have ever found. Every person should have their own copy of this book. And if you don't, you're missin' out bud!
