I got an A in evidence and used this book religiously! I also used the E&E and did as many practice problems as I could get my hands on. Also, there is a famous Harvard evidence exam where all the questions are just "is this hearsay or not hearsay?" (if you google it, it should come up and there's a good chance your professor will bring it to your attention). Anyway, I also recommend understanding every single question on that exam and why it is hearsay or not hearsay. Professors lovvvve to use examples like this both in the exam and while cold-calling in class. Understanding hearsay will be at least 50% of your exam, if not 70%.I will say this book was a lifesaver though and greatly simplified concepts that I was confused on. I liked it a lot better than the E&E.
Full disclosure: I am Professor Orenstein's mother. I am also a staff attorney at the Appellate Section of the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender. I have shown this wonderful book to all of my collegues, and they all want one for themselves. The book makes a complicated, sometimes counterintuitive subject clear and easily understood. It is more than simply a primer on evidence law; its concepts and construct make it eminently useable in the real world of law. I may be biased in its favor, but having reviewed the book, I have a good right to be so.
Actually bought this book for reference after my evidence class. Wish I had bought it before my class, or at least sometime before my final... I usually recommend the Nutshell books, but for evidence the Nutshell was way too long. It wasn't practical for quick reference or short explanations. Sometimes the Acing books are too short. In my opinion, however, this is the book to go with for evidence.
Orenstein tackles a huge, complicated subject and breaks it down into easily understood segments, and not without some (appropriate) humor. This book is a must-have for law students, law clerks, and even for federal judges. It's a handy reference guide; the checklist approach at the end of each chapter can fool you - they look more complicated than they are, those checklists.
Really practical guide for students as well as practitioners. Leads you through the evidence thicket with practical examples and straightforward analysis. Wish I'd had this when I was in law school.
Not bad for a first edition but I had higher expectations. A little disappointing. Some of the Rules cited throughout the book are completely incorrect. Also, on one instance I recall a question that randomly inserts an extra person. Overall, the checklists are helpful. The book gives a very general overview. Not something I would heavily rely on. Acing Civil Procedure and Property are still my favorite!
This was by far the most useful book to me while attending my Laws of Evidence class. I may not have survived without it!! I plan on keeping this book in my office to refer to for years to come!!
This is a good, helpful supplement, but the errors are distracting and sometimes make it confusing (mostly sentence problems, i.e. missed words, repeated words, etc).
