The Korean War: The Chinese Intervention

They came out of the hills near Unsan, North Korea, blowing bugles in the dying light of day on 1 November 1950, throwing grenades and firing their “burp” guns at the surprised American soldiers of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. Those who survived the initial assaults reported how shaken the spectacle of massed Chinese infantry had left them. Thousands of Chinese had attacked from the north, northwest, and west against scattered U.S. and South Korean (Republic of Korea or ROK) units moving deep into North Korea. The Chinese seemed to come out of nowhere as they swarmed around the flanks and over the defensive positions of the surprised United Nations (UN) troops.

A lot of people don't understand that most of the Korean War involved combat between American and Chinese Soldiers, and that the US Army was actually forced to withdraw from North Korea during November 1950 because of Chinese tactical victories at the Chongchon River and the Chosin Reservoir. This commemorative brochure details of both of those battles, as well as the major decisions of senior American commanders, in a simple but well written manner. You don't have to be a military expert to pick this up, read it, and understand it. I highly recommend it.

Friends of mine who were in Korea in 1950 & 51 how the machine guns barrels will melt. In Nov. 6 1952 I was a combat medic with a platoon from Alpha Co . 32nd Inf 7th Inf Div in Kumwa, Korea when we were ambush close to hill 1052. We suffered 2 dead and 4 wounded included myself .

Short read. Too detailed about certain battles. Not much about end of this war

It's just an outline of the main events surrounding the Chinese intervention. Too much is left unsaid and unexplained. As an outline of the highlights, it's okay.
