This is a wonderful book with the personal professional guides in text and pictures. It covers the great treasures from a great culture of Aztec. The well organized chapters guide reader for a logical exploration. I am fond of the Coyolxauhqui, Goddess of the Moon with a poem on page 122. Another wonder piece is on p.129, the blue vase with Tlaloc mask, a deity brought to life by the artist in clay, color and form with two pointed teeth and round eyes. Of particular interest is the picture on page 135, showing a puma skull with green stone sphere between jaws. The author rightly pointed out that when a figure of the nobility died, a jade stone was placed in his mouth. Does this Mexica culture diffuse from China as they have the same belief and tradition as seen in the movie "The Last Emperor"?This book gives a comprehensive tour of the important collection from the Great Temple. It is a wonderful trip.
Matos is not only one of Mexico's greatest anthropologists but was also graced with the talent of writing. In this book he poetically explains the concepts and mysteries that lay in Mexico's most sacred pyramid. Of the hundreds of complex books written on the great temple- this one puts them all to shame
