Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 7 In Full Score

Among the most popular of Mahler's symphonic works, the 7th Symphony has neither a "program" nor a folk-song theme. It is a purely instrumental composition, both hopeful and romantic in feeling. The restrained mood and thematic economy of the symphony make it one of the least extravagant of the composer's works; it is also one of the most enjoyable.Despite the lack of a "program" for the 7th, some critics profess to find that "a good case can be made out for the symphony as a whole having been consciously built round the poetic idea of nocturnal nature, progressing through various shades of darkness" (New Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians). Now musicians and music lovers can make their own determination by studying this inexpensive edition of the complete score, reprinted from the authoritative German edition of 1909.

The issue here is the score, not the music. Since Dover specializes in reprints, it's forced to use what's in the public domain. The results are consequently uneven. If you're looking for Brahms' orchestral music, or Wagner's late operas (after Lohengrin), Dover's scores are bargains, because the scores printed are reliable. On the other hand, there are Dover scores that one should avoid like the plague, & the reprint of Mahler's Seventh Symphony is one of them. This score was originally printed with 300+ errors, & this is the edition that Dover publishes. In fact, all the errors weren't removed from the score until the critical edition ~ this is true even of the Eulenburg scores, which falsely claimed at every reprint, that the errors had been removed. So if you really want the orchestral score of the Seventh, the only version that's musically defensible is the critical edition.

Always one of my favourite Mahler symphonies, this score enables the listener to discover the nuances and intricacies of this incredible composer. The score is clear, well printed and helpful to add a further dimension to the enjoyment of this defiant and forceful symphony.

I have used Dover scores for many years. They are complete and very reasonably priced. More readable than mini scores.
