Boosey and Hawkes have been hard on my wallet lately. On the heels of the excellent Purcell (The Purcell Collection High Voice Realizations by Benjamin Britten) and Stravinsky (The Stravinsky Piano Collection: 14 Pieces) collections, here is a handy and affordable compilation of the holy trinity plus one of Copland ballets transcribed for solo piano, with a duo-piano chaser. We have what appears to be the full suite from "Appalachian Spring," the complete "Rodeo" including the piano interlude section, and the complete "Dance Panels." "Billy the Kid" includes only the opening "Open Prairie," street scene and Mexican dance, "Billy and his Sweetheart" (the section usually known as "Waltz" in the complete ballet), and concludes with the "Celebration after Billy's Capture". The "Dance of the Adolescent" is for two pianos; it was originally written for the ballet "Grohg" and later used as the first movement of the "Dance Symphony," which is how most Copland fans will recognize it.Typefaces are easy on the eyes, not too many staves on the page, nice white paper.It would have been nice to have more of "Billy," but this is still a real pleasure to play through, especially since much of it is technically within the capability of non-virtuosos. Enthusiastically recommended.
