Australia's Bush Poets Henry Lawson Part 1

Henry Lawson (1867 -1922) was the leading Australian writer of his generation, as reflected in being given a ‘state funeral’ on his death in 1922. Often contrasted with his contemporary ‘Banjo’ Paterson which resulted in the ‘Battle of the Bards’ being conducted in ‘The Bulletin’; Henry’s dour (realistic) depiction of life in the new western lands being in contrast to Banjo’s rural idyll. For Part 1 of my Henry Lawson collection I start with Borderland, the poem that initiated the ‘Battle’ along with some of Henry’s outback/bush related poetry.Poems in Henry Lawson part 1: Borderland, Bourke, Jack Dunn of Nevertire, The Shanty on the Rise, The Teams, A Voice from the City, A Word to Texas Jack, Eurunderee, Andy's Gone With Cattle, Andy's Return, As Good as New, Australian Bards And Bush Reviewers, Ballad of the Drover, Beaten Back, Ben Duggan, Billy of Queensland, Bound for the Lord-Knows-Where, Break o’ Day, Australian Engineers, Brighten’s Sister-In-Law [or ‘The Carrier's Story’], Broken Axletree, Bush Hay, But What's The Use, By Hut Homestead And Shearing Shed, Cherry- Tree Inn, Corny Bill, 'for'ard’, Mount Bukaroo, Shearers, Song of the Old Bullock-Driver, The Cattle-Dog's Death, The Drovers, The Drover's Sweetheart, The Fire at Ross’s Farm, The Lights Of Cobb and Co., The Never Never Land, The Teams. Australia’s Bush PoetsAustralia's 'bush poets' provide a rich, entertaining history of the development from settlement to nationhood for the 'Lucky Country'. In their verse newcomers, like me, quickly learn how the Aussie 'Can Do' culture was formed that has come to define the modern nation. Unlike the classic English poets such as Wordsworth, Keats and Shelley, Australia's bush poets are largely drawn from the grass roots (working class) of the new society telling their tales as entertainment for the new Australians.Hugely popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries these bards are little known outside Australia; which is our loss? Through the publication of 'Australia's Bush Poets' as Kindle Editions I hope that you to will come to enjoy and share this 'Can Do' heritage. Here you'll find struggle, loss, pain and gritty reality mixed in with liberal helpings of Aussie humour; I leave it to you to make the pick.Kindle is the ideal medium for 'Australia’s Bush Poets' as you can read these verses round a trail campfire at night or when sheltering from the blazing sun; best of all a Kindle will fit in your pocket while riding a droving horse, exactly the situation this poetry was designed for.

Henry Lawson wrote very good, unsentimental stories about rural Australia. Unfortunately he also wrote very sentimental doggerel. Worst of all, he's better known, or rather "more notorious" for his poetry than his prose. If you ignore the poetry and read his short stories, particularly his early ones, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Loved the stories!!
