Renombrado bailarín - coreógrafo y una figura clave en formar la edad de oro del Hollywood musical. La primera prueba para el cine de Kelly, para la RKO en 1935, fue un fracaso, pero tres años después de irse a vivir a Nueva York en 1938, sin embargo, había conseguido establecerse una sólida reputación en los escenarios de Broadway, lo suficientemente fuerte como para que David Selznick le propusiera firmar un contrato por siete años. Kelly intervino por primera vez en la MGM con la película, “For me and my Gal” (Por mi chica y por mí) (1942), con Judy Garland. La película no era nada excepcional, pero la interpretación de Kelly impresionó lo suficiente a la MGM como para comprar su contrato. En 1951, recibió un Premio Especial de la Academia por sus talentos excepcionales, "especialmente por sus brillantes logros en el arte de la coreografía del cine". Estuvo casado con la actriz Betsy Blair desde 1940 a 1957 y con la bailarina Jeannie Coyne (esposa anterior de Donen), desde el 1960 hasta que ella murió en 1973.
