I was so excited when this collection was published! I think it's been a long time coming for singers who want the collected Sondheim collection for their voice part. The book is well made, well collected, very readable, and has a lay-flat binding. No complaints there. My main gripe with this collection is that many of the songs have butchered accompaniment. Songs like Losing my Mind (Follies) or Loving You (Passion) have the most obscenely basic piano parts--boring, mirroring the vocal line on the piano, etc... This is inconsistent between songs, though, so while all of the songs from Sunday in the Park have their original piano parts, others like those mentioned above do not. This won't make a difference to most, as this book is meant to be an audition book and easier for accompanists. However, the piano voices can't hold a candle to those found in the original vocal scores for these shows. When you're trying to prepare recitals/concerts with songs good in your range and you get a book with bland accompaniment, it's disappointing to be left to look elsewhere.
I recently bought every book in this series- (Soprano, Belter, Tenor, Bass, Duets) I am going to post this same review on each page, so if you're seeing my name, there's no reason to reread any. I dropped a pretty penny doing it- but I would do it over, and over, and over again. In fact, I'll probably do it again next month so that I have 2 copies of each book. Years ago (maybe...20 ??) I bought the first (to my knowledge) series of Sondheim song books, and have treated them like they were priceless, because to me, they are! I was so thrilled when I saw these! Other reviewers do an excellent job of discussing how the songs compare to listings in other books. However, if you're like me, and want everything Sondheim there is- you simply MUST have these. There's no other way to say it.
