In October, 1975, the International Haydn Conference was held in Washington, D.C., during the last eight days of the Haydn Festival at Kennedy Center. This volume contains the proceedings of a groundbreaking conference on Haydn's music. It contains not only the text of conference papers delivered at the conference, but transcriptions of some of the Q. and A. sessions that occurred between paper sessions as well. The result is that it is almost like listening in to some of the smartest musicians and musical scholars of the 1970s--Charles Rosen, James Webster, e.g.--as they discuss the musical that matters to them. I didn't give it five stars because the subsequent decades of work on 18th century music and Haydn have rendered much of the material somewhat dated. Later, more detailed insights from Webster on Haydn, for instance, may be found in his Haydn's 'Farewell' Symphony and the Idea of Classical Style: Through-Composition and Cyclic Integration in his Instrumental Music (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis) and elsewhere. But this is a very valuable resource for anyone interested in how current views of Haydn's music have evolved since the '70s.
