The cleverly titled GLAMOUR, GIDGETS, AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR by Herbie J. Pilato is a lot of fun.If the author's name sounds familiar, it’s because Herbie is THE quintessential expert on all things BEWITCHED and author of several obsessively delightful books on that classic series and its beauteous star, Elizabeth Montgomery. Here, he expands his outlook to take a look at other now-iconic female performers from what has turned out to be television’s classic years of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.If you’re looking for in-depth bios, cheesecake fantasies, or scandalous memories, you won’t find them here. What you WILL find is a warm and pleasant revisiting with old friends in an almost scrapbook-style environment. Each woman gets a picture, a brief but respectful biography, a listing of career highlights and some often fascinating quotes. For those of us who grew up with these people as our imaginary friends, GLAMOUR, GIDGETS, AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR is a real treat. In fact, the biggest complaint one can lodge against this thick volume is who ISN’T included. I didn’t worry TOO much about that, though, because I was busy enjoying who IS included! As one would expect, you’ll find Liz Montgomery, Farrah Fawcett, Julie Newmar, Stefanie Powers, Donna Douglas and Lynda Carter. Less expected but perhaps even welcomer, one also finds Sally Field, Valerie Bertinelli, Elinor Donahue, Barbara Hale, Inger Stevens, Anne Francis and even the once mega-popular Lennon Sisters! And that’s just the beginning!Far from being just a cold reciting of the details of these ladies’ careers, Herbie offers up his own occasionally insightful observations in each chapter.
Glamour, Gidgets, and the Girl Next Door: Television's Iconic Women from the 50's, 60's, and 70's by Herbie J. Pilato is a 2014 Taylor Trade Publishing release. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you are a pop culture enthusiast or someone you know is, then you will not want to pass up this wonderful, fully illustrated book. I love pop culture so this one appealed to me instantly. This hardcover edition is not as large as many “coffee table” books in length and width, but it's fairly hefty. I have already spent hours thumbing through this book, and my family has also passed it around, completely absorbed in the trivia and other interesting facts about television in this era and the many roles women played.Broken into segments this book features women who could do a little of everything like Cher or Marie Osmond, who could sing, dance, act, and worked in both television and movies.Teen angels, such as Patty Duke and Valerie Bertinelli- Country girls, like Donna Douglas ( Beverly Hillbillies) and the ladies from Petticoat Junction, all the way through to the women who played roles as spies, ( The Avengers, Mission Impossible) to the glamor girls like the trio from Charlie's Angel's, to super heroes like Wonder Woman ,to the ladies who brought the women's liberation movement to prime time television. Each featured actress is profiled with a brief biography, their best known roles, iconic facts and best known quotes, plus beautiful photographs of the ladies, mostly in color but a few black and white pictures too.The book is chock full of little bits of trivia and information about household names we still remember vividly to those who may have flown under our radar.
Glamour, Gidgets and the Girl Next Door: Herbie J PilatoProfiles are meant to highlight the life of someone in order for others to learn more about them. Within the pages of this book the author has created numerous profiles allowing readers to enter the worlds of so many that brought joy to our television screens for so many years each in their own unique way. Share the comedy of Sally Field in “”, Barbara Eden in, “I Dream of Jeannie,” and Mary Tyler Moore as Laura Petrie. Each section of this book is marked and filled with many different actresses that encompass different time periods in television history. Section One is titled The Jills of All Trades, the second The Teen Angels, the third the Country Girls, followed by Super Sleuths, Wonder Women and the Liberated Souls. Every section filled with explicit biographical information about each actress, their roles, and their impact on the public and an explanation of their lives and careers.Let’s begin with Marlo Thomas and her role in “That Girl.” The author highlights her role, the importance and issues brought out in the show and her relationship with her parents and boyfriend. Quoting from her blog for the Huffington Post the author sums it up perfectly in Marlo’s words: Nothing is more inspiring to me than a young girl who has found her strength and confidence, and has a healthy self-image. Marlo is truly a living legend. Mary Tyler Moore is one of my favorite actresses and her role in the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show was unique and priceless. Playing opposite Dick Van Dyke must have been exhilarating and with Ed Asner and Ted Knight what more can anyone want.
