A Year In The Life Of Downton Abbey: Seasonal Celebrations, Traditions, And Recipes

It's 1924 and there have been many changes at Downton Abbey since the family and their servants first welcomed us there twelve years ago. A generation of men has been tragically lost at the front; children are once again breathing new life into the great house; a chauffeur now sits at the Grantham dinner table; and skirt hems continue to rise.Still, in the midst of all this upheaval, many things at Downton remain largely unchanged. Nanny still holds sway in the nursery, and there are still summer fetes to be organized, menus to be planned, and farms to be run. This gorgeous book explores the seasonal events and celebrations of the great estate―including house parties, debutantes, the London Season, yearly trips to Scotland, the sporting season, and, of course, the cherished rituals of Christmas. Jessica Fellowes and the creative team behind Downton Abbey invite us to peer through the prism of the house as we learn more about the lives of our favorite characters, the actors who play them, and those who bring this exquisite world to real life. A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey is packed full of exclusive new photographs, with a delicious array of traditional British recipes adapted for modern kitchens: kedgeree, orange marmalade, asparagus tarts, cream of watercress soup, Irish stew, lemon barley water, meringues with red berries, parmesan straws, Christmas pudding with brandy butter and more. From the moment when the servants light the fires against the chill of January, through the last family game of charades and the servants' Christmas ball, this magnificent book invites us to take part in twelve months in the life of Downton Abbey.

Almost finished reading this. I am enjoying every minute of it. It talks about past episodes as well as #5. It tells many, many minute details about the filming of it, costumes etc. Not that much filmed in the Castle itself, which was surprising. It tells what happened month to month if you were an aristocrat or servant during the time from 1700 forward. It links the past with the future. Any DA fan will love reading this. It would make a great gift also.

A beautiful volume with large, color photographs a beloved Downton Abbey. BTW the recipes bring a wonderful surprise to the text. I gave this book as a gift and received surprised ooings and aweings.

I bought this as a Christmas present. Of course I looked through it before I wrapped it, and was surprised to find that it was more of a summary of the series than it was a cookbook, which I had thought it was. It did have some recipes in it, and I actually wanted to try several of them, but I was disappointed that there were so few. However, the person I gave it to loved it so I was pleased that I had gotten it for her.

Great Addition to My Downton Abbeys Series of Books and Publications... Well done and thoroughly put together and kudos to Jessica Fellowes for her tireless work presenting this Great Additio nto anyones Library...

The fourth Downton Abbey picture book (Behind the Scenes was the 3rd) this one is just as good an addition to your collection as the others. Beautiful photography, including behind the scenes pictures, from 1st up thru the upcoming 5th season- this time out the pictures and text are divided month by month. You'll also find extras such as background historical information and appropriate seasonal recipes (I think that's a new feature and I'm not completely sure they're Americanized but if not they won't be too much of a problem to adapt).Good book to own even if you don't care for the series- would make a great gift for someone too.

The author is making a killing off of her Downton books-and one look through the one I gave to my Assistant tells me all I need to know-quite simply they are so very well done. It's a gift that will be a hit for anyone wrapped up in the Downton series.

A MUST READ before Season 4 begins! I loved every minute of this book and recommended it to many of my email buddies.

Excellent recap, look at production, background information and peek into season five.
