Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you.Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the books and/or TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.I really like this book. What is different about this one from others that I have is that six different artist have contributed to the designs. It makes for a variety of coloring opportunities. Some designs are simple – almost child-like. I can color those as-is or put some of my doodling/art skills to work and add some unique elements to the designs. Others are moderately challenging and will be good ones to work on when I simply want to color. Finally, there are designs with a lot of intricate and small detail. They can be colored, but it will be a challenge and one that I will enjoy because these designs are so beautiful.Physically, the book is very well made. The designs are printed on one side with details from the books written on the back of the page. The pages are thick and white; however, they are not perforated. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so removing pages from the book will be a little more difficult. Most of the designs merge into the binding, but the portions that might be lost if I cut the pages out are not the central theme of the design.None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. My water-based markers did not leak through; however, my ultra-fine Sharpies and Copics did. In any case, I would recommend putting a waste sheet of some sort (chipboard, freezer paper, cardstock, etc.

This is a coloring book for adults. Given that it's Outlander, I was a little worried that it might be an "adult" coloring book, but that isn't the case. Nothing indecent here! It's simply marketed for adults who enjoy coloring, not children. If you aren't familiar with Outlander, it's the first in a series of novels (eight, currently) written by Diana Gabaldon, about a WWII combat nurse who accidentally travels 200 years back through time, going from the 1940s to the 1740s. She makes a new life for herself there, including a new husband. The books contain lots of history, adventure, drama, romance, and a touch of sci-fi/fantasy. This coloring book seems to focus on the first book only, depicting scenes from various chapters. It's not inspired by the new TV show, with two exceptions. The closeup of Claire's wedding gown shows the acorn embroidery from her wedding gown in the show, a detail that isn't mentioned in the book. And Fort William is actually Blackness Castle, a fort near Edinburgh, Scotland, that dates to the 1600s. I've been there, so I recognized it instantly when it appeared on the TV show, and when I flipped through the coloring book, I likewise recognized it. Other than that, however, the scenery and characters aren't based on the TV series. The artwork was drawn by several different artists, so the difference in artistic styles is noticeable. Some of the pages are more simplistic, for those who prefer filling in large patches of color, where you can zone out and not worry about what you're doing. Others are highly detailed, for those who'd rather color intricate scenes. The paper is heavy, so you can use either markers or colored pencils. I'm not sure it's heavy enough for watercolors.

Selfish thing that I am, my thought as I looked through the OOCB was, “Oh, I hope they publish one for every book in the series!”Note: This coloring book is not based on the Starz series, the actors, etc. The art in this book is the artists’ (6 of them) interpretations.I love it. There are 6 artists so there are different drawing styles. Most are detailed drawings, some of which are close-ups (Ellen’s bracelets, Ellen’s pearls around Claire’s neck, dirks, crests, etc.) There are very detailed wide scenes, i.e. the mill at Lallybroch, Castle Leoch, etc., as well. There are Redcoats, Highlanders, a stable scene, a castle, a fort, Mrs. Baird’s Inn, Jamie and Claire (one particularly detailed drawing of Claire in lovely dress), Jenny & Ian, the women dancing at Craig na Dun, Frank, Claire at the Stones, Geillis with a unique way of holding her pestle, a beautiful scene of Claire in the herb garden surrounded by doves with a dovecot nearby, Colum in his study (one of my Faves!), a close-up, detailed drawing of about a dozen people at mealtime at the castle (lots of food at the table – another fave). “Claire’s wolf” makes an appearance as well, and there are many others. The OOCB follows the Outlander timeline in that first we see Claire at the stones and the last pic is that of a ship. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think the rendition of (some) the physical body types could have been better. (Not to match the book exactly – or the series – but just generally _better_.)There is one drawing per page and on the opposite facing page, the Outlander quote which inspired the drawing. The pages are sturdy and not the least bit flimsy. The OOCB cover is very attractive as is the overall book itself.
