This book is a must for anyone looking for overviews of the warriors and armies in the Americas at the time of their encounters with Europeans in the 1500's. Along with general history and specific details on the indigenous peoples militaries, the book also contains captions for individual "warrior-types" that are highlighted for each culture.Obviously some are more extensive than others, but this is due to the amount of knowledge that is currently available. For instance, the Aztecs and Purepecha have a pretty wide and diverse representation, while others, may have less or at the very least just one. Even so, one of my favorite things about the book is that it shows the lesser known/famous people, like the Pipil, Cimatecs or Cazcane. The book covers all of the Americas and even some of the conquistadores (And not just the Spaniards!).The best part for me though, are the clear illustrations for the warrior-types highlighted (247 in all). Even though these are black and white drawings, the captions describe the colors that would be in the appropriate shaded areas. And me being more of a 'visual' person made the book a really neat addition to my research library. I bought this book as reference material for research purposes on Mesoamerican armies. But, if you're just curious of what kind of armies existed in most of the Americas during the 16th century than check this one out. It's by no means a complete overview of all the cultures (such a task would be impossible), but it's a good start nonetheless.
Great resource. Very well done and a must have if your interested in the subject.
The information and pictures are useful; the editing is not up to the standard of Heath's earlier books, and I ground my teeth a bit reading it at times.
This is the go to book for information about early Native American warriors and weapons. Covers many more peoples than the Aztecs and Incas. The Mapuche of Chile were my favorites.
