Cello Concerto In E Minor In Full Score (Dover Music Scores)

A tour de force for any cellist, Elgar's magnificent Cello Concerto is performed more frequently than any other except that of Dvorák. Regarded as an elegy for a lost world, the Cello Concerto was written after the composer's lengthy creative stagnation during World War I. Melodic and evocative, it exhibits a remarkable scope, ranging from tragic passion to buoyant optimism. Cellists and other music lovers will delight in this full score of Elgar's last major work, reproduced from an authoritative source.

There isn't much to be said about the way a score is printed as most are really very similar. Dover scores are sometimes derided for being inconsistent, with some editions containing errors, but I have yet to come across them in the few Dover editions I possess. They are preferable for study books because they are bound to be laid flat, which is all the more appreciated after so many years pushing books like this and concerto scores to the back of music stands. The Elgar concerto itself is a classic for its breathy opening and the important place it has occupied in the cello's repertoire, as well as with the careers it has made, most famously that of Jacqueline du Pré. It seems to differ from the composer's other work precisely because of its thoughtfulness, similar to the famous Enigma Variations, whereas his violin concerto is beloved for its expansiveness and technical demands. I do appreciate its contribution as someone who matured as a violinist before developing a relationship with the cello. If for nothing else, Elgar's cello concerto is certainly something to have in one's library for the times when the mind wanders.

If you are learning this concerto, you need to know its orchestration, so you might as well get this, and play through the whole piece from the score so you know what's happening.
