I'm a HUGE Tchaikovsky fan and his symphonies are the biggest reasons as to why (particularly these last three). I'm planning on getting my degree in music composition and have written many different pieces, so as one would assume Tchaikovsky's music has had a huge influence on my own writing style. I've studied his music before via imslp, but it gets rather old after a while having to view it from a pdf file and scroll the pages to find certain spots. This however is perfect for studying! It's great to be able to take notes and mark on the pages what chords he used in certain progressions, how he used the French Horns (or whatever instrument), where rhythmic themes occur that you didn't realize before, etc... But anyways, I'm loving simply just being able to follow the music on the pages while listening to it. But regardless, if you're looking for affordable sheet music for these three symphonies this is an excellent choice in my opinion. The notes, dynamics, expressions and everything and very clearly marked. Highly recommend it! Great investment!
This is a good edition of Tchaikovsky's most popularly performed symphonies. Its greatest quality is its usefulness. It is a large score with room enough for notes and revisions, and the medium print makes it a bit easier on the eyes than some scores. Due to its quite low price one is more inclined to use it without apprehension, though it will eventually fall apart due to the lower quality of the materials. I have found that it can take pencil markings without tearing the pages, and really that is good enough. Its "lay flat" binding makes this easier for podium or desk work as well as simply holding it with one hand.
Buy this and the other score (1,2 and 3 score) because knowing you have the complete Tchaikovsky set... you have the Tchaikovsky mastery. It is excellently laid out should have no fear of loose sheets.
Important and affordable for conductors, music students, and afficionados, this edition is a valuable tool for the personal and professional library. The rehearsal numbers and letters correspond to the Kalmus/Lucks parts, so these scores can be used from the conductor's podium. Like all Dover scores, the paper is not of high quality and the binding will eventually fail with age and repeated use. Many conductors have the binding cut and bound with a good quality spiral binding for longer life. Dover scores are a fraction of the cost of the scores printed by the music publishing houses, which makes them the scores of choice for students and musicians on a budget (aren't we all!)
Yet another triumph on the part of Dover Publications! Good size format allows easy following of all orchestral parts for anybody but the most visually-impaired; the full richness of the writing is there with practically no mistakes; an absolute MUST!!!
I buy these scores strictly as an amateur. I can't even read music very well. But I find them invaluable in trying to work through the structure of music that I love. So for that purpose, this is perfect. I seriously doubt these scores would be of use for any purpose other than private study, but for that they are perfect.
The score is free of any errors and is VERY easy to read. Large binding for PIT's three greatest symphonies. Highly reccomended for classroom study, personal study, and professional use.
