With Bruckner's 4th I would have said that the last version (the one that is best know) is clearly the best but with this Symphony it seems that none of the revisions quite makes it all work. This is probably Bruckner's least successful work but i think this version - the original conception of the piece - is the most successful. Without doubt this is the best version of the slow movement - the sweeping climax is intoxicating and it never reaches that pitch in either of the other 2 versions. Great to be able to compare versions now that these scores are all available
