Mr. Marlowe's book chronicles his life as a child growing up in Germany followed by his service as a U.S. Army MP, and later, CID Agent. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the fact that it shines light into an area of military service which is rarely written about by an insider such as the author. While the role of the Criminal Investigation Division today is more or less understood not too much is known concerning its early history beyond the most broad of outlines. Mr. Marlowe's first hand account regarding the evolution of CID as well as its work in occupied Germany and Vietnam are extremely valuable and really are quite unique. Mr. Marlowe gives an excellent account of the day to day lives of CID Special Agents by discussing cases that he or his fellow Agents handled. A number of very interesting photographs are included within the work. The book's major shortfall, and the reason that I cannot give it a higher number of stars, is its editing. The editing really is quite poor unfortunately. The book jumps around quite a bit and isn't a consistent narrative in the way that, say, Homcide: A Year on the Killing Streets was. This is understandable as David Simon is a professional journalist while Mr. Marlowe is not. That being said, a professional should have gone over this work to make it somewhat more coherent. Also, Mr. Marlowe's description of events is somewhat bare and his emotions or thoughts regarding his work are often absent. The result is that while the book certainly has its moments it lacks power and force.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in military law enforcement, particularly Army MPs and their CID counterparts. A rare book indeed.
Mr Marlow experienced an interesting career in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1976 as an army detective in the CID. Born in Germany and having lived there as a child in World War II, he immigrated to the U.S., joined the Army as an MP, and was able to rise up to be a Warrant Officer. He tells of his own experiences investigating Army crimes, and give stories by other CID agents. Some interesting photos too. It stands out as one of the few first person accounts of this investigative agency. However the book was obviously published by a vanity press because of the poor editing. That aside, I recommend it for the military investigations buff.
