Nocturnes And Polonaises

One of the most respected editions of Chopin’s works was prepared by Carl Mikuli, Chopin’s student and teaching assistant. His editorial contributions to this volume reflect his understanding of the principles imparted to him in word and deed by the composer. The 20 nocturnes reproduced here include Opp. 9, 15, 27, 32, 37, 48, 55, 62, 72, and the posthumous Nocturne in C-sharp Minor. The 11 polonaises include Opp. 26, 40, 44, 53, 61, 71, and the posthumous Polonaise in G-sharp Minor. Serious pianists will want to have these authoritative texts of 31 of Chopin’s most popular and enduring works, reprinted from an authoritative early edition. New unified table of contents.

Don't buy this edition if you are under the impression that it is The Paderewski Edition published by Dover. This is now the new Carl Mikuli edition published by G. Schirmer (perhaps the worst edition in the world) reprinted by Dover. Dover used to publish this from The Paderewski Edition; however, for some reason, it's gone out of print. If you can get your hands on an old copy of this from The Paderewski Edition, I would highly advise buying it! It's much better, and more true to Chopin's intentions. Even if you can't find an old Dover copy, The Paderewski edition is still published privately. Don't buy this edition, it's truly a waste of your money.

I have to say that the Dover edition is my favorite for most any piano music, regardless of composer. The copy I have of this book is quite beat up, mostly because it has been used for many years but the pages and cover are still in considerably good shape. Besides containing some of the most beautiful piano music of the romantic period, the markings and notation are easy to read and understand, making the composer's intentions for the music perfectly clear to the pianist. I highly recommend this book, along with any other piano music editions by Dover Publishers.

This is NOT the Paderewski edition even though they are listed as the editors. The book is fine, though it is missing several piano pieces expected from the Paderewski edition. It is an incomplete version of nocturnes and polonaises.

No, this is not the Paderewski edition as stated in the description. Look inside and you will see that it is edited by a different editor. Confusingly, however the cover is almost identical with the previous Dover edition of the Nocturnes which WAS edited by Paderewski. The only difference in covers is that the actual Paderewski edition states on the cover "The Paderewski edition" below the title. That is the edition I have, (along with the Henle) and I am only writing this review because sent me a daily deal note about their current edition.I would buy the Paderewski edition in preference to this edition. But because I have recorded several of the nocturnes (they're on and iTunes), I also own and often choose to play from the Henle edition, which includes the wonderful posthumously published C#minor nocturne omitted in the real Paderewski edition. I have written a separate review of the Henle edition, and would say that you should if possible buy both the real Paderewski and the Henle. Henle is more legible, but Paderewski is quite good. Henle makes some editorial choices that not everyone would agree with in several nocturnes, and so too does Paderewski. It is well known that Chopin hated the labour of writing down the notes, and several sources have come down to us. But, I would probably buy the Henle if you want a single edition: it is the most legible i.e. easiest on the eye, and there is no doubting its editors' professionalism and general reliability.

Notes are printed clearly. Binding is durable. Pages won't come out easily. This is not a complete edition of Nocturnes and Polonaises. This book has only 11 Polonaises and does not include 5 more Polonaises. Despite being criticized spurious by some music scholars, the omitted Polonaises are great for playing. It does not include the other postumous C minor Nocturne. If you want a book that is different from G.Shirmer's edition, this book will NOT do.

Yes, Chopin is my favorite. This book contains a pretty complete list of Nocturnes and Polonaises, though I haven't got to all of them. It's always one or two pieces I buy the book for. And these are formatted in a way that is easy to read.

My children all play Chopin ... I am not talented enough or maybe I just don't have time to learn ... but they say these are the best books.Although having it spiral bound would be better, it's wonderful to have these resources used at great prices!! For the songs that get played over and over again we either copy them or rip the binding out of the book. Of course it could be taken to a professional book binder to have it spiral bound but we try to do things as frugally as possible.Great buy!!

I purchased this book because it was advertised as a Paderewski edition, in an attempt to answer a question that I have on the Nocturne #20, C# minor, Op. Posthumous. It was suggested that the Paderewski edition may more true to what Chopin intended, and I was surprised that I received the Mikuli edition.I have studied this Nocturne, and also listened to several recodings, mand this is my question; The time signature at the beginning of the Nocturne is 4/4,tempo Lento. The time signature changes to 2/4 at measure 32, and to 3/4 for measures 33 to 40.However, in all the recordings I listened to, the pianist plays measures 33 to 40,at about twice the speed, although most editions, including this Mikuli, do not show a change of tempo at measure 33. I did find one edition by Joseffy, published by Schirmer, which shows a tempo change to Animato at measures 30 through 40. I am still looking for the most correct interpretation.
