This guide is a well written, concise introduction to this great opera. It contains the entire opera on 2 CD's. The text of the guide identifies the track listing, so you can pick up where you left off.I am studying Rigoletto before the performance next month, so I can be prepared. Have found this to be an excellent guide.Post-performance update: This guide really came in handy; I knew a lot about Rigoletto before the curtain even opened. I've always enjoyed opera music but I had trouble understanding the words and the plot. This guide gives some background on the Opera's Composer (Verdi), some historical background as well as a brief but interesting summation of the plot. The two CD's that accompany the book provide the complete audio of the opera. (Beverly Sills in the Gilda role and Sherrill Milnes in the role of Rigoletto) The Libretto provides the text of the opera both in Italian and English. I enjoyed this guide so much that I am hoping to collect the whole series.
My family is going to Italy in the fall and on a whim we decided to go to a real Italian opera. Rigoletto was listed on the internet at the opera house near our hotel, so we purchased tickets. I ordered this libretto to learn the story and take with me to the opera. It's perfect, very inexpensive and very light to pack. Arrived on time and in new condition.
Just to counteract the reviewer who did not review this product, which is the ONLY vocal score you will ever need for Rigoletto as it is as perfect as one can be (all of the usual Schlirmer (sic) horrendous mistakes and left out details have been fixed in this score).
The ENO guides are really the best bang for the buck. A thorough listing of the main themes, several essays on the opera, and the libretto. When I want to learn more about an opera, I look for ENO guides first. This one does not disappoint.
The physical volume is 8" x 10½", and 1" thick, with 431 pages of score, preceded by synopses in Italian, English, German, and French; a list of roles; a list of instruments; and a brief table of contents stating where each act begins. If you want to find "La donna è mobile," you need to go to Act 3 and start looking (hint: bottom of page 313). The text and notes are printed clearly, not occasionally faded as in some scores that I have seen. I would subtract half a star for the absence from the table of contents of the famous arias and the quartet, but it will serve my purposes.
This is the first version, I believe, and in an old type face. A fine replacement for my old score, which had fallen apart.
