Though it has gone through several updates and revisions over the course of the last four decades it has not lost any of its value or importance. It is absolutely essential reading and integral to the well founded development and matriculation of the young officer. This book lays out, in no uncertain terms, what is expected of every leader in the military. Though specifically targeted at the Officer, it is of supreme value to individuals of all ranks. But this book is not just for military people. It is a great in depth foundational work on the principles, traits, philosophy that are essential to leadership.
This book should be on the essential reading list for any junior officer in the armed services of the United States. It provides significant information on the history of the profession and outlook of each of the services. It develops the though process of what being an officer means as a profession including the duties and responsibilities to society and your Soldiers/Sailors/Airman/Marines.I can not recommend it in high enough terms.
A comprehensive, well-written, essential "how to" book on officership. Would make a wonderful gift for any newly commissioned military officer. While aimed at the new officer, will serve as a wonderful touchstone on the basics of leadership for an entire career. Also a good read for anyone interested in military history.
I have read this book, cover-to-cover, numerous times. Its lessons are timeless, lessons I've applied on a daily basis throughout my career. Every officer, scratch that, every leader needs to read this book.
This was a decent and brief manual about different aspects, expectations, and guidelines to enhance a U.S. military officer’s career. There were some important takeaways such as keeping finances in order, learning a second language (I was lucky I to be born overseas), and mastering your craft. Of course there also is the standard idealistic leadership kool aid which one should expect reading a book of this kind. Overall, I wasn’t blown away but I wouldn’t say that it was a waste of my time either.
