Above says it all. I purchased this for 99 cents because, although the beautiful poems are available for free due to expired copyright, I wanted the index functions and decent elenctronic formatting. The index works fine the formatting is awful with lines misplaced, cut off and words omitted. This is less of a problem in pulp fiction but intolerable for great poetry.
The good thing about this book is that, because it isn't a comprehensive collection of Eliot's work, you get The Wasteland and other best-known poems, and you can take it with you while traveling. It's also very good for people who are unfamiliar with Eliot's work. I like the variety collected in this volume. I have a Complete Works, and it's a tome. Huge. This Collected Works is a good overview of the work of the man considered the finest poet of the 20th Century. The Table Of Contents and the addition of some of Eliot's non-poetic writing is also very enjoyable. I'm very glad I bought this volume.
Unfortunately it is missing "the four quartets" - my favorite series of poems - and it is not possible to find them on kindle - only in a book talking about them
Yes, a great poet. Yes this book does manage to include many of the high points. And yes, there are better collections that include more contemporary scholarship but this was does have its charms and by my rolled trousers, it won't harm you to have a few varied collections of the genius' work.
T.S. Eliot's work has entered the realm of classics. One may argue with some of the views, but not the work itself. If there is anything wrong with this edition, it is that, contrary to the title, it doesn't represent the entire body of Eliot's artistic achievements.
In one of his essays he examines the labels we put on people collectively. In another essay he analyzes the “passion for experience” and the artistic temperament in people. The essays really make you think because they are so in depth .T. S. Eliot is a very observant critic of poetry as evidenced by his writings on the subject. He even writes about the critics of poetry itself being very well versed in all its applications ,meanings, and also to its origin. He talks of the components that make good poetry as deriving from its author. He also critiques the classic works of the Greek plays as interpreted by contemporary artists and other works of art especially in literature. T.S. Eliot discusses the origin and usage of “blank verse”. The reading of T.S. Elliot is an in-depth study in literature. His work gives insight into the motives , techniques, and effectiveness of famous classical authors. He speaks of ;Shakespeare, Cruikshank, Massinger, Fletcher, Middleton, Tourneur, Webster, Ford, Milton, Marlowe, Swinburne, Jonson , Kyd ,Blake, and Pound to name just a few.
The words are there, but with wrong spacing, breaks, and, the line numbers on the wrong places. The subtle beauty of Eliot clouded.
Rereading the poetry is shere joy. But experiencing for the first time his collected easays on critics, writers and their output is an awakening. If you love Eliot or wish to get to know him this is the place to go.
