This book was not very useful as a history of the war. There are hardly any dates and many stories were out of chronological order. Also, it could have used a good edit, as there are lots of misspellings and grammatical errors. Some of the chapters list other combatants names as the titles, so I got lost trying to figure out if it was Gadea speaking, or he was telling the other combatants story. Sometimes he was, sometimes he wasn't. Dates, and knowing who was speaking would have made this book much better.However, this book is useful to understand what the war was like for the average contra fighter. The war was tough and bloody, and this book reveals just how tough it was. From the moment of recruitment, contras were under the gun having to survive the trek to Honduras under constant harassment and ambush by Sandinista units along the way. Several of the recruits with Gadea were killed only days after joining, and another group decided to desert only days after that. The contra task forces that penetrated into Nicaragua had to run the gauntlet of Sandinista soldiers guarding every boundary and crossing point. Casualties were high on both sides, but they still kept on fighting. Wounded were left behind and hidden by peasant collaborators who nursed them back to strength. Then, the recovered contra had to make his way back alone to find his unit. How high the casualties were is illustrated by the fact that Gadea says he had four brothers and an uncle who joined the contras ahead of him, two of which were already dead before he arrived in Honduras, and his uncle died later. Demonstrating the fratricidal nature of the war, he also had a number of brothers that were recruited by the Sandinistas.
