This is the first book-length study of Shostakovich’s Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues for piano, Opus 87. Mark Mazullo explains the cultural context in which Shostakovich composed, relates the cycle to piano works (by Bach, Hindemith, and others), and offers individual commentaries on each of the Preludes and Fugues.

I don't know if I'm qualified to write a review on this book. But since there are no reviews, I wanted to note that I've read it and really enjoyed it. I'm not a pianist, but as a Shostakovich Op87 listener, this book was still useful.-The context section was very useful with good general info about Shostakovich as a composer in general and Op 87 in particular-The detailed of each prelude and fugue gave me a lot of insight into what DSCH was trying to accomplish and lots of new things to listen for. It's pretty technical. But if you're interested in the piece, and find it difficult to get your head around, this section of the book is really useful.-The analysis of recordings (performance history) was good (I just have the Keith Jarrett version, but will now get the wind ensemble version too!)So, in general, I really enjoyed it. I haven't read similar books so my 5 stars may be over-rating this, but as one reader, I'd like to note that I really enjoyed this book. It is a bit expensive, but I reckon that is the norm for these academic books.
