Truman Fires MacArthur: (ebook Excerpt Of Truman)

An intemperate general. An unpopular war. A military and diplomatic team in disarray. Those are the challenges President Obama has faced as he attempts to make a success of U.S involvement in Afghanistan. They are also the challenges President Truman surmounted in the winter of 1950 as he began managing a war in Korea that risked becoming bigger and more costly. It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War: United States troops under the command of General Douglas MacArthur came to the aid of the South Koreans after North Korea invaded. When Communist China entered the conflict on the side of the North Koreans, the crisis seemed on the verge of flaring into a world war. Truman was determined not to let that happen. MacArthur kept urging a widening of the war into China itself and ignoring his Commander in Chief. On April 11, 1951, after MacArthur had “shot his mouth off,” as one diplomat put it, one too many times, Truman fired him. The story of their showdown—one of the most dramatic in U.S. history between a Commander in Chief and his top soldier in the field—is captured in all its detail by David McCullough in his biography Truman, and presented here in a e-book called Truman Fires MacArthur (an excerpt of Truman, McCullough’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography), which was the headline carried in many newspapers around the country the next day. Truman Fires MacArthur will continue to ride the headlines. It will go on sale as an ebook just as the Rolling Stone profile that exposed General Stanley McChrystal’s insurrection and forced his resignation hits newsstands, and media coverage of the showdown continues to draw historical analogies between Truman and Obama.

Harry S. Truman, in my opinion, was one of the best Presidents this country has ever had. He made a lot of tough decisions with the philosophy "The Buck Stops Here". He didn't back down from what he believed was right for America. Even with the dropping of the bombs in WWII, that incident brought many troops back home to their families and sent a clear message to the enemy. He handled the insubordination of Gen. MacArthur the only way he could have. Take him out of his command and show him that he was not in charge of this country. I shudder to think of the American soldiers lives that would have been lost had he been allowed to continue his war efforts. God bless you Harry S. Truman. You brought my dad home to me. I will be eternally grateful.

Good value snippet from McCullough's book. Has encouraged me to purchase the complete book. The book begins with the settling of Missouri. Snippet covers the background of Gen. McCarther's removal as commander in Korea, despite his popularity with the American public. One of Truman's difficult decisions during his presidency. McCullough is truly one of the great historians of our time.

It was interesting of course. However, I was disappointed when I learned that it wasn't new information but a repeat from part of "Truman" as we both had read that book. I don't remember seeing that mentioned in the pre-purchase review.

After reading Truman, by David McCullough, many years ago this excerpt is a clear reminder of the extraordinary man, leader and president he was. It is a must read for any and everyone who must make decisions, especially, unpopular ones, whether small or large.

An absolutely fascinating look at the Korean War and the politics of firing a hero. Told as only David Mccullough can tell it. I went on to listen to the audible rendition of Truman. Also excellent look at history.

In my opinion, David McCullough is one of the best authors out there. I haven't read any of his books I didn't like. He has the ability to take an event or person from history & make a smashing-good story about it.

One of the great political-personal, political-military dramas in US history!Hopefully there is even more about in "Truman", and of course this is a great tease for McCullough's Truman tome!Buying the whole book is certainly the better value---but this chapter brings a terrific focus!

Should have taken more care to read that this was only an excerpt from the full script. I was disappointed to learn that I had paid for only one chapter. Order, perhaps might have place more appropriate caution signs about ....maybe in flashing neon, for us older folks.
