Author Reinaldo Ovando is a legendary Chilean fly fisherman and guide. He has expert knowledge of remote Patagonian lakes and streams that surely rank as some of the finest fishing locations in the world.Here he has written a book on the subject of fly tying that has great value on a number of levels.This is the rare resource that will be useful to beginning and expert tiers alike. Either way, if you're considering a trip to Patagonia you'll want to have it on your shelf, or better yet, open at you tying bench.Ovando starts with a thorough survey that unravels many of the mysteries of fly tying materials. Selection and characteristics of various furs, hackles, dubbing, threads and hooks are all delved into in an easy to understand manner. He then goes over the important tools of the trade, and then helpfully introduces basic tying techniques that are applicable across a wide cross section of flies. This introductory section takes up about a third of the book.The next section features detailed and richly illustrated step by step instructions for a variety of important patterns. Some are familiar standbys such as the Parachute Adams and Royal Wulff, others unique and highly interesting patterns designed by Ovando himself. I'm in the process of tying up a bunch of his SOS Caddis - certainly among the most lifelike and innovative caddis fly patterns I've ever run across. I can't wait to try them out when trout season opens in the Adirondacks where I do most of my fishing.The final part of the book is devoted to 150 patterns (dry flies, streamers and nymphs) that in the author's experience are particularly effective in Patagonian waters.
