Well written with lots of photographs, this book provides a good overview of how prisoners of war from all sides were housed and treated during World War II. Particularly helpful are the side-bar human interest stories and insights on the reactions of prisoners to their circumstances. Many readers may not know of the role of German and Italian prisoners working in small towns, camps and on farms throughout the United States. Or, that many thousands of Russian soldiers taken prisoner by the Germans were executed by the Russians upon their return. Of particular interest are the many accounts of specific events, such as the execution of many thousands of Polish officers by Russian troops in the Katyn Forest about 10 miles west of Smolensk. The sheer number of pictures included is impressive. They give a visual dimension to the stories that make this a classic work. However, readers are cautioned that some of the photographs are graphic and may not be appropriate for pre-middle school readers.Highly recommended for high school, college and public library collections supporting research papers and other research on the topic of World War II prisoners-of-war.R. This book was shipped to me by mistake; I was reading many of the Time-Life series but this was not on my list. I read it anyway and was fascinated by the stories. Rather than depressing as I feared, it turned out to be a great read with good photos and art.
The book was as described. Would buy from this seller again.
