Soldiers Of Misfortune: Washington's Secret Betrayal Of American POWs In The Soviet Union

The results of six years of research reveal that the U.S. government ignored, for half a century, the fact that more than 25,000 American prisoners of war have been held in the Soviet Union.

Another reviewer [SD] has asked some pertinent questions. Where and who were all the POWs and why didn't their families know? Well, obviously the reviewer was not paying attention. The majority of the POWs who were not returned were those who were "liberated" by the Red Army. Many of the POWs who were "taken" were those who were captured after the Battle of the Bulge. They were in the best health and their whereabouts were in question. Field Marshal Alexander TROOPERS command in Italy pointed out in a message to AFHQ that those 20,000 POWs being held at Graz, Austria were NOT being transported overland as promised. The Soviets were not sending back Allied troops one for one for Russian troops.Secondly, there were family members who were looking for their sons, the case of Mrs. Stinchnoth is well documented. She was told that her son died in the destruction of his plane the Damifino at the raid on the Ploesti oilfields. Body totally and plane totally destroyed when it crashed into an ammo dump. Yet, after the war, Mrs. Stinchnoth received a letter from a former translator at Stalag 3a who wanted to know if Sgt. Reitz, her son, had made it home safely. Since Sgt. Reitz, according to the government had been incinerated some years prior, where did the translator get her address to inquire about Sgt. Reitz? How did he even know about Sgt. Reitz? I might remind you that Stalag 3a, Luckenwalde, was where many POWs were taken to the Soviet Union, ostensibly to be sent to Yalta and sent home on ships. Only 2989 US POWs came back from the Soviet Union that way. Where are the rest of them? What about the parcels that family members sent? Well, trust me, few of the parcels actually got through. Even fewer were the letters that got home.
