The Assyrians: The History Of The Most Prominent Empire Of The Ancient Near East

Discusses Assyrian military tactics, religious practices, and more Includes ancient Assyrian accounts documenting their military campaigns and more "I fought daily, without interruption, against Taharqa, king of Egypt and Ethiopia, the one accursed by all the great gods. Five times I hit him with the point of my arrows, inflicting wounds from which he should not recover, and then I laid siege to Memphis, his royal residence, and conquered it in half a day by means of mines, breaches, and assault ladders." (Esarhaddon) "I captured 46 towns...by consolidating ramps to bring up battering rams, by infantry attacks, mines, breaches, and siege engines." (Sennacherib) When scholars study the history of the ancient Near East, several wars that had extremely brutal consequences (at least by modern standards) often stand out. Forced removal of entire populations, sieges that decimated entire cities, and wanton destruction of property were all tactics used by the various peoples of the ancient Near East against each other, but the Assyrians were the first people to make war a science. When the Assyrians are mentioned, images of war and brutality are among the first that come to mind, despite the fact that their culture prospered for nearly 2,000 years. Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible's depiction of certain events, the Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites.

This 54-page brief on one of the key ancient civilizations of ancient times is thorough, well-edited and has several appropriate photos and illustrations. I think it is far better than some of the more lengthy, dry, detailed histories I have tried to read. What I most enjoyed were the translations of old writings. Indeed, I found myself wanting to try writing some novellas depicting the period just several hundred years before Christ would be born.I wish someone would write a good series of historical fiction about the region, keeping it historically accurate, from the point of view of the Assyrian peasants and rulers. Perhaps there already is such, but I've not found it. There are several series written from the Egyptian times, but, alas, too few from the Assyrian.Anyway, I love The Assyrians by Charles Rivers Editors.

this book, based upon written documents from the time, gave me new information about the early Monotheist writings of the old Testament. especially the diaspora. the perspective is fresh and confirmed to be historically accurate by consulting two or more sources whereever possible.

This book has no author. It is by a company who supplies "digital content." The first thing you should look at in a book like this is "Who is the author?" "What are their credentials?" "What work have they done in the field?" If you want to learn about the Assyrians, find a legitimate book.

It was very insightful and interesting since Assyrian history, unlike ancient Greek and Roman, can be like a detective story, tryin to recreate what it was from different sources. e.g., the Old Testament Bible, ancient Greeks like Herodotus, etc. For someone that's curious about ancient history, this is very entertaining and informative.

An interesting compilation of facts. Broad but not very deep. It's an overview which would be best used as background for reading more detailed books which go deeper into the subject matter.

If you are in search for a brief but substantive overview of Assyrian history without all the scholar babble one typically finds with academic historical works, this is definitely the book for you! The best primer on an ancient near east nation I've come across to date. Fantastic-fascinating read from start to end!

Talks about the fall of Samaria and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. The Assyrians were a terrifying Semitic people who started out in their native city of Asshur. From their they spread under their first great kings like shalmanesar. They died out after they meddled with conquering the Babylonians. Chaldean Kong Nabopolassar became the victorious hero for the Babylonians as he then ruined the Assyrians glory to the dust.

The book is short and to the point and very helpful. BUT - and here's the funny part (see pictures) - It has the table of contents for A DIFFERENT BOOK!!!
