Hey folks,Most folks know about all the science and all the scientists who made the atomic bomb possible at the laboratory level during World War II. However, most folks have no concept whatsoever as to the unprecedented level of industrial engineering which was required to take the scientific concepts of nuclear fission and apply those concepts to the actual production of those weapons. Scientific prediction and discovery that uranium could be made to split apart at the atomic level and result in the production of unprecedented levels of energy was just the beginning. While the scientists did their theoretical work, industrial engineers had to design the vast systems and facilities required to actually produce the fissionable material required. Prior to the Manhattan Project, no engineering effort in history had ever approached the sheer size of the myriad of tasks required to make the science of nuclear fission become a practical reality in the production of the nuclear weapons which would have such an effect on ending our war with Japan. The reader is introduced to the many largely unknown folks who built cities of workers where there were virtually little or no people living previously, and he will be introduced to the folks who designed filters capable of separating uranium atoms by weight and those who developed pipes capable of resisting the extremely caustic effects of uranium when transformed into a gaseous state. And all of this unique tale is told in language for the layman to appreciate.I first read this book a year or two after it was first published, and I was captivated by the story. It really is a great story of the relatively unknown aspects involved in the industrial production of the atomic bombs.
