This score of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9 Op. 70 is hard bound and very nicely laid out in both Russian and English. It is the nineth volume of the New Collected Works Edition. The music is VERY easy to read and well printed . There is a brief history of the symphony and the various editions and errors that have been corrected in the score by Manashir Iakubov. There is also a Facsimile of some drafts of the symphony in the back.In his nineth symphony, Shostakovich makes fun of the ideals of a Nineth Symphony (a la Beethoven's legacy) by writing a brief, comical, and "light" work, full of musical puns.Overall, a great buy and good price.
This is a great edition, hardcover and with many nice details.Only thing which makes me give 4 stars in stead of 5 stars is the fact that bar numbers are wrong. Actually not wrong but incredibly applied - the russians have counted upbeat to first bar as a bar, plus prima volta and seconda volta have also counted as bars twice! I had bad luck not to notice this small detail until I was in front of an orchestra and they had the western edition with western bar numbering policy :)Music is great, one of the finest pieces D.S. wrote.
