The Matchlock Musketeer follows the lives of soldiers armed with this weapon from its adoption by the English in Queen Elizabeth's reign until its replacement with the flintlock at the end of the 17th century. It was used extensively during the Armada Campaign (1588), the English Civil War (1642-1651), The Restoration (1660) and the Glorious Revolution (1688). The musketeer's experience in battle, skirmish, siege and camp saw both change and continuity during this period. The common experiences of the musketeer (including digging trenches, firing and fighting, and life on campaign) are explored in this title.

I am a member of a reenacting crew doing a 17th-century English privateer impression. Our kit is heavily influenced by the English Civil War era, and the plates in this book give an excellent overview of campaign life during that time. Let's face it...a soldier's life can be a messy one and this book doesn't gloss over that.It is one thing to see color plates reconstructed from funeral effigies and court paintings, but quite another to see such of the life of the common soldier. One even points out that the seasoned campaigners represented therein are carrying their weapons in a practical manner to keep them from the elements, not shouldered in parade-drill order.The text of this book also delves into camp and campaign life and all the trials and tribulations, as well as pastimes and joys, a soldier on the march faces.
Great book, very helpful when doing a tabletop war game in the Renaissance time. I used this book to help paint miniatures , so they would look right for the time.
