This excellent book (Guns of the Old West by Charles Edward Chapel) is a classic and collectors item. This was originally published in 1961 by the author but it came out with this special edition in 1995 for The National rifle association by Odysseus Editions, Inc. This beautiful hardcover book is well-researched and covers an enormous amount of material on the history of early fire arms. The beginning chapter explains how guns began and moves on to the Kentucky rifle and pistol used on the western frontier. The Flintlock pistols are covered, as well as numerous other guns such as the musket, rifle, Carbine, Percussion and cartridges, the pocket sized derringer, early Colt revolvers, other rifles and handguns used during the civil war and in the push westward.The Winchester rifle, the 72 Model Peacemaker, buffalo guns and shotguns are also covered. The final chapter also explains the guns of Teddy Roosevelt. Even though the numerous photographs of all the rifles and guns are in black and white; nevertheless, they are clear and details on each of the weapons is thoroughly explained in this wonderful volume.If you are into the history of firearms, especially the ones used in the old west, this is a book you should check out. I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF SOME OF THE PICTURES WERE IN COLOR
I have to admit the content of this book may be good, but I took a good look when it arrived and the old drawings and pictures did not grab my attention. Text is small too. I put it down and just picked it up for this review. Buy this book here as it is expensive if purchased in its latest edition. A hard core collectors reference no doubt most guns in this book are unobtainable unless bought from a collection for alot of money.
For anyone interested in the firearms of the old west they must read this book! It is both informative and interesting, with small stories and anecdotes throughout.
