Wondrous Moment: Selected Poetry Of Alexander Pushkin

Alexander Pushkin (June 6, 1799 - February 10, 1837), is widely considered to be Russia's greatest writer. He is credited with enhancing the Russian lexicon and introducing a language that, while bridging Romanticism with Realism, would become a foundation for Russian modern literature. His poetry, marked by innovative rhymes and rhythms, while, at the same time, maintaining natural tone and diction, has a very unique and distinct sound that is drastically different from anything written before him. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, has been recognized all over the world and translated into 86 languages, including at least 42 translations into English. This small, dual-language collection is an assortment of some of his best known poetry with some of the lesser known works.

The quality of translation is amazing. The spirit of Pushkin's poetry (I an a native Russian speaker) is rendered with surprising accuracy, and so is the melody of the verses.

The problem with translating Pushkin, any Russian will tell you, is that he is a very musical poet and most English translations lose the music by being too literal. Not so this collection, whose poems sing and fly with a distinctive 19th century flavor. I don't speak Russian but I am a poet and I recognize the artistry of the work here. The translator is fluent in rhyme and the poems are clear and well rendered. I will leave it for Russian scholars to determine the accuracy of the words.

I absolutely love reading Russian poetry and studying the history thereof. Alexander Pushkin is no doubt an awesome poet, and of course one of my all time favorite. The problem that I face is that I don't speak (or consequently read) Russian, and so I therefore am very reliant on a good translator, and a creative one as well: Andrey Kneller is hands down both. His transliterations are creative, beautiful, concise, and beyond reproach! If you're an English speaker as I am, yet love Russian poetry, or want to read and learn about Russian poetry, I absolutely recommend you to pick up Andrey Kneller's translations!

Outstanding translation. The translator clearly proved that Great Russian poetry could sound great in English language. Thank you for building so meaningful bridge between these two cultures.
