I bought this book for the Bilibin illustrations and was very disappointed. The book is smaller than the Russian original and poorly printed. The print quality combined with the matt paper makes the colours dull and muddy. Compared to the original Russian editions this book looks like it has been printed on newsprint with a very low quality photocopier.Try to find one of the original Russian editions from the 1960s instead. The paper, colours and print quality are 10 times better.
OK, so I've read the reviews and kind of expected a book of poor quality. Still, I wanted to read the fairy tales in russian to my kids, so I ordered it. The paper is like that of coloring books, unpleasant to the touch and easily ripped. The color balance is terrible. And the print font is a bit imposing. The print font would not be so terrible if the paper wasn't see through, thus you are not only attempting to read gothic print, but you also have to contend with the shadows of the letters from the other side of the page. Apparently, this book is "print-on-demand" and it shows. I ordered it on Feb 4th, the page on the back says that it was printed on Feb 5th, 2013. I received it on Feb 7th, 2013. So, the quality is sacrificed for the ability to print the book after it is ordered. Still, a week later I went into Philadelphia for something and took the time to stop at a russian bookseller. Found a very similar book there, for about the same price, but the quality of the paper was night and day. Glossy pages, vibrant colors, print type that is easy on the eyes. Just like a fairy tale book should be. By comparison, this one was severely lacking. You can tell that the pictures would be gorgeous if someone took the time to do the color balancing and printed it on better-than-coloring-book paper. It's a shame I spent the money on this book.
My brother lived in Russia and this was a great gift. These fairy tales are very common in Russia and Pushkin is a very famous Russian poet so it was a good gift and the illustrations were so pretty I wanted another copy for myself.
My son love it))) And i am so happy i can found russian books in America and i can read to my son Pushkin original
I really enjoyed reading Pushkin's tales again. Apart from the most well-known tales (Skazka o tsare Saltane, Skazka o rybake i rybke, etc), I like also his "Zhenih"; it fascinated me even in childhood. And the Bilibin's illustrations are a delight to see!
The book is printed on grey-pink paper. To give it an antique and charming look? This makes the rendering of the colours less vivid, I would guess. If I really had "looked inside", I should have figured it out before ordering. But the illustrations may look better on a backgrond-lit computer screen. Could have been worse: the paper is not of that glossy type that stinks of acetone, which often is used for illustrated books.
Only one thing is not perfect :not enough illustrations. I remember having this book in my childhood. It's suppose to be more pictures.
