I'm a lifelong Shavian who thought I had every Shaw play in existence. This volume proved me wrong. There are many plays in this volume I've never even heard of, much less read. It's an indispensible collection, and a bargain as well!
Most of Shaw's plays still read well and humanity has evolved so slowly that the prefaces are still valid. Shaw's acerbic wit and insight are worth the price of admission. Do read the prefaces. If you fail to do so you will miss much of what Shaw has to say.
Ys, the plays are here but the most important parts are missing - the Forewords and Afterwords. Disappointing. Without these, the collection is effectively neutered.
Have not read all the plays in this book, but St. Joan and Caesar and Cleopatra are two of my all-time favorite plays. The author's introduction to the play of St. Joan is nearly as long as the play itself. Caused me to think he was very serious about this play. Caesar and Cleo is quite cute. Recommend watching the movie with Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains.Mrs. Warren's Profession is light and interesting.
Another book I ordered for my Kindle for Ireland Trip. If you like GBS, you'll need the essentials here. Great for theatre buffs like me :)
Magical dialog, settings and descriptions that leave no doubt about how the stage is set. Easy to see why Shaw remains a favorite. This is such a bargain for my Kindle Fire!
