I spent a lot of time looking for the best edition of Romeo and Juliet, taking into account the notes, layout, and typeface. I looked at Arden, Cambridge, Folger, Norton... you name it, I looked at it. This was by far the best. The notes in this edition are detailed and extensive, way more than the other editions I found. The typeface is easy to read where so many other editions kept the typeface so squished it hurts your eyes. The font, line spacing, and kerning is extremely comfortable to read. And the layout is fantastic. The notes are on the left hand margin so you don't have to keep bouncing down to scan through a paragraph of footnotes. This edition also has some fantastic "extras" that I found to be extremely useful. I feel a little goofy coming over to leave a review on the greatest playwright in history, but after finding this edition, I wanted to sing hallelujahs to the heavens. It is the only version to have everything. I'm off to buy the rest of his plays in Oxford School editions!
Love this format. The notes on the side are much easier to refer to than notes on the bottom. No longer does one have to constantly lose one's place while looking at the notes. The paper is a good quality, bright white and substantial weight. And the font size is easily readable (both the text and the notes.) And although this doesn't affect the quality of the book at all I love the cover art.
I used this book while I was student teaching in an English class. The book has many explanatory notes and some fun activities for the students. I would not say this book is flawless, there were a few of the notes that I felt could have been better, but for the most part it was extremely helpful.
This version contains excellent character summaries, scene & act summaries and many other important notes on histories, themes and other details. These resources definitely provide students with what they need to become familiar with the play. My son received this book this year and so I have downloaded it so that I can discuss it with him. It's great for parents like me also - I know that there are many of you out there!
Oxford School is the #1 introductory Shakespeare series because it is perfect for teens who simply want to read and understand Shakespeare's plays as well as scholars who want a wealth of accurate and fascinating information. As with all Oxford School editions, the margins alongside the text of the play contain ample, clear notes on how to understand Shakespearean vernacular. To publish an edition that carries out the task of rigor without compromising its comprehensibility to a younger audience is most impressive, and this edition of Romeo and Juliet is no exception. Especially recommended for instructors of theater or Renaissance/Brit lit!
My daughter had to have this exact edition for sophomore English. I feel like it would be unnecessary to say why this is an important and entertaining work. the book arrived promptly and in perfect condition.
A great resource/version of R&J for the student forced to read the garbage of Shakespeare, who was really just a pervo hack of a writer. Unfortunately, most of the good books of his time were banned or burned before anyone really got to find out about them. At any rate, If you are a student forced to read this freaks work, this is a good version to study from.
