Dr. William Wright was an ear, nose, and throat specialist that decided to take his career in a different path. This book gives insight into his job as a physician at a county jail in Colorado. We get a view into the lives of the prisoners from the perspective of the clinic as well as how the doctor came to be there and how he left. The concerns and dealings with the prisoners are different with the staff of the clinic than they are with the police officers and guards. They have medical issues like everyone else but these are usually exacerbated by not having access to routine medical care and is often compounded with drug and alcohol abuse and poor nutrition.I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. It was like sitting and listening to someone tell their story of working in such an environment. This is a book that everyone should read.
William Wright's book Jailhouse Doc: A Doctor in the County Jail is a book that everyone must read. It is one that will grab you from page one and keep you reading until the end. I read it in one sitting. Those pages will turn and turn and turn some more for you.It is about Dr. William Wright who was an ear surgeon that had become bored with that practice and retired. He then found himself bored at home and underfoot of his wife. Seeing an ad for a doctor for the Criminal Justice Center (CJC) in Colorado, Springs, Colorado, he decided why not? There are many stories shared in this book. It gives a lot of insight into what actually happens in the medical area. Also shared are how inmates come in and the health condition most of them are in. It was so interesting the ways the inmates were able to make items that they needed. Not just the men but the women as well. Everything seemed like each day would be similar to the last, that is until the second highest ranking law enforcement officer in the sheriff's office decided she could be a doctor. Things changed real fast after that .......... Could the medical area stay as it had been? Would others try to take over the medical center? What happens to Dr. Wright? I gave this book 5 stars but it truly deserves many, many more. This book is so good and I highly recommend it to everyone. I anxiously look forward to more from William Wright, M.D.
Like Dr. Wright, I also provide healthcare at a correctional facility and am quite passionate about it. This was an interesting and highly entertaining book. I recognized many things from my own job that are quite unique to this often underestimated and overlooked field of medicine. I appreciated the humor and readability of the book. I do not read many books in this genre and so sometimes the organization and selection of the sections seemed a bit random to me, but after all it's not meant to be a masterwork of literature. At times I initially felt like Dr. Wright seemed a bit judgmental about his patients. Unfortunately, many people working in corrections become jaded and burnt out. However, in this case I believe it is simply the sense of humor that also tends to come with working in this environment. Overall, he shows a lot of compassion and understanding of the complex social dynamics that bring people into prison. I especially appreciated him pointing that out.
Interesting story that makes a lot of good points about how jails and prisons are run. In particular how the medical facilities operate, but also the politics of the facility. This is a fair read that I would recommend for anyone whose state, county or city are considering outsourcing their medical services for prisoners.
I was assigned by my agency to b an AIDs educator at what was the oldest county jail in the country. Built in 1814! No toilets filthy conditions and a odd sheriff. I can verify that Dr. Wright memories of the corruption and political shenanigans were totally accurate. The games the inmates played were nothing compared to the sheriff and his buddies. Brought back a ton of memories
Dr Wright, I heard about this book from a handful of others, many of them El Paso County Sheriff's Office employees. Having worked with you as the HSA at CJC, I have to admit, this was a great read - very quick and easy to follow. Having actually worked with you there at CJC, it was very comical and reminiscent of some interesting times. Thank you for your ability to "paint a picture" with your experiences and share them with others not familiar with the correctional medicine environment. I encourage others in the medical field to share this book with others that may be interested in 'testing the waters of correctional medicine'. Working in corrections is definitely not for everyone; however, it is also not a path often thought of for medical personnel. I have great, great respect for those I worked with (including you) at CJC (both medical and many in Security working for the Sheriff's Office), and encourage readers to go check it out when you are done. I encourage those in the medical field, from Medical Assistants all the way to provider level, to check out corrections and give it a try. Every day was an adventure and no two days are ever the same - these stories in this book are definitely real....and only the tip of the ice berg for what you will see and encounter. Those that know you, know you have a passion for helping people and doing whatever you can to make the best of the situation at hand. You are not only missed by many of the medical unit staff (most of which are not even there anymore), but also by me. Please send a big "Hello!" to Mollie as well.
