This book has all sorts of neat facts about guns from different points in history. Some is just plain useless knowledge that you'll never use, but there is a lot of cool facts that are kinda neat to know. I work at a gun store and it will be a great addition to my knowledge!
I expect a "trivia" book to be full of interesting and amusing facts and short anecdotes. That describes maybe 10% of the material in this book, and it is not done particularly well. The writing is stolid, clear but unstylish.Most of the book is instead lists of information, more almanac than trivia book. It doesn't work as an almanac, however, because it is neither comprehensive nor well-organized.Offsetting those flaws, there is a tremendous amount of information in this book. It's fun to open at a random place to learn something. Reading in order is a chore because you never know what's coming, either in content or form, but it is educational.Readers should also be warned that "gun" does not include civilian weapons, whether for hunting, target shooting or self-defense. This is a book about military weapons small enough to be handled by one person, from sidearms to mounted machine guns and grenade launchers.The book's military focus extends to material on designation systems, procurement, training and distribution, rather than just the physical properties of each weapon. There is only a little about the physics or engineering of firearms, and only a bit more about tactical use.While I did not dislike the book, I don't think there are many people who want this. General readers will want more amusing and dramatic material, and gun nuts will want more technical detail and organization. But if you're looking for lists of facts about small military weapons, this is your book.
Gordon Rottman's THE BOOK OF GUN TRIVIA offers up 208 pages of ESSENTIAL FIREPOWER FACTS. Published by Osprey in 2013, it's an interesting collection of facts, stats and history.Rottman's book arranges its material in chapters entitled 'Essential Gun Facts,' 'Weapon Myths,' 'Ammunition History and Facts' and 'Ammunition Myths.' Inside are blurbs on longest-serving weapons, Maxim guns, the largest caliber rifle, 'Ditch Guns,' holding/firing pistols sideways, shotgun gauges, silencers, firing small arms underwater, Tommy Guns, Gatling guns, the worst small arms adopted by the U.S. military, recoilless rifles, etc. There are a few photographs and diagrams scattered throughout the book.Gun enthusiasts not to mention trivia buffs should enjoy THE BOOK OF GUN TRIVIA. Recommended.
Outstanding reference, lots of fun! challenge your shooting buddies with what you learn. See if they know the difference between fact and fiction.
[*I received a copy of this title in exchange for a honest review*]Having grown up around guns, I have always had a love for them. This book was amazing in the information that it gave. I love watching the History channel and similar shows on guns and this book offers the same information, but plays to the reader in me! I absolutely would recommend this book.
few pictures. Fairly interesting, but sometimes leaves you wandering about what is not told. A great idea, but could be implemented better.
