The Night lasted five years and eight days.Before the Night began, Ernst Bornstein was a precocious eighteen-year-old¬ who had an ordinary family with three siblings, two parents, and a large circle of friends and relatives. I have read many books on the holocaust and will continue to do so. This is one of the most incredible survival stories I have read and so well written. I read it from cover to cover in one day. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't rest until it was finished and I knew he was free. How such an innocent young boy, and so many others, endured so much and still managed to survive, just astounds me. It humbles me to him and the many millions of Jews that suffered so much at the hands of the evil Nazi regime. I believe we all have an obligation to learn as much as we can about this horrific time in history. It makes me ashamed of the human race that people turned their backs on this terrible situation and that some even refuse to believe it ever really happened. This dreadful part of history should be taught in all schools. It should be remembered always. So that it is never allowed to happen again.
This is a story which should be read by all. It is such a contrast of his courage and fortitude against the hatred , and evil of Nazi Germany. In order to honor the deceased, one needs to read of the horrific past. The world should remember so that we do not repeat or allow someone to repeat this past. Man has such potential of strength, courage and love but also the potential of such hatred and evil. We must speak for those whose voices have been silenced.
This book broke my heart, he endured so much. I will never stop reading about the holocaust until there are no more books to read.
A most unique and different view of a Holocaust survivor. Good to see a different viewpoint without the war, political or economic factors. At end of the book I have gained a renewed and deeper appreciation for all those that lost their lives and especially those that carry these horrible memories. The story should be shared with a wide audience. Never forget!
An accurate and unsentimental account of one young Jewish man's struggle to survive the horrors of what we now call the Shoah. Do not come here for sentimentality or exaggeration, the story is lucid and cogent, even understated. Bornstein remembers the names of those who were with, him, the few that helped him, those who added to his suffering, and the companies that benefited from his slavery. It is a difficult subject but I read it easily and quickly, eager to find out how Bornstein survived against the evil that confronted him. This is an important piece of history, it is really the story of one man's fight to live to tell it.
It was very detailed in describing the mental and physical inflictions on all of those kept captured the Germans during WW!!. My heart and mind could not believe that anyone could inflict such pain on another human being, I know that it is a true story so that makes it much more believable.
But impossible to put down. This volume deserves an honored place among great books on the Holocaust. I believe the author's survival was providential and that he was meant to bring this story to the world.
Moving and different than other holocaust memoirs because of its inclusion of insights in to how evil can visit ALL humans. Rather than us being able to reassure ourselves that this type of evil is restricted to Nazis, it forces you to question your own moral fortitude and requires a thoughtful reader to be ever vigilant against falling into the trap of these types of demons. Unfortunately, this is a message we need to be hearing again in these times.
