If you are only going to have one other book to aid you in your Old Testament studies, this is the one to have.Josephus can be a bit of heavy going at times, because he goes into great detail but if you can stay with him, he can teach you a lot.If you have ever read Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, you'll have the flavour of Josephus. He answers questions about Jewish history that you didn't know you needed to ask. It's the kind of book you'll highlight and bookmark all over. You can spend a lot of time here but I found him rewarding.I"ve had this collection for months as part of a Bible Study software program and I haven't yet read a tenth of it.
Maybe it's Kindle, maybe it's the book, but I can't find the topics I'm looking for in this format.Kindle should be able to index books easily and provide that (or a concordance) with each book - especially history books. I'd pay a little extra for this.
Flavius Josephus: The Complete Works of Flavius Josephus is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in Jewish or Biblical history. I’ve owned the book for many years and finally bought it for my Kindle.Spent many wonderful hours reading this early 1st century Jewish historian. His perspective on the events of that day are an invaluable addition to any library. Highly recommended.
If you are interested in Roman and Biblical history the is is an interesting book to read, A good translation is actually enjoyable. He was a Hellenistic Jew who became really Romanized and became an apologist for his people, explaining their history and traditions.I read it in High School Latin class and in College and several times since.
If you see the problems of the Middle East to be a consequence of 20th century history, you should read this book. You will realize the 'Middle East' bedeviled empires from the ancient Egyptians onward. At the heart of it lies the Israelite nation and Jewish identity. Josephus' account of the ultimate destruction of the pre-Christian Judaic world in 70 AD is heartbreaking to read, not only for the brutality of the events, but more so for its causes. The account of the First Jewish War is almost as good a history as Thucydides' History of the Peleponesian WarWARNING FOR THOSE WHO BUY THE KINDLE VERSION...This book is, as is Jewish history itself, very, very long - about 1200 pages in print.
Somewhat repetitive. there were instances where I thought I was rereading the same chapter. I did however appreciate this e book version for studying the times in which parts of the Bible were lived so I could have historical perspective on the time when Jesus and the Apostles lived in Judea.
Be aware this is an older edition of the Josephus, complete with archaic vocabulary and no editor's notes or commentary (that I can yet find). Hence the budget price. Whereas, both Paul Maier editions, the "Essential" (1995) and "Complete" (1999) Josephus, also use the old Whiston translation (1737), but with the invaluable addition of Maier's commentary, discussion of historical background, updated spelling and vocabulary, pictures, maps, charts, cross-references to Loeb numbers, indexes, etc. See http://www..com/Complete-Works-Josephus-H-Flavius-Josephus/dp/0825429242/. Neither Maier editions are available digitially (as of this note). My rating is for this edition.
Josephus was a Jewish historian living in 100 A.D. He details much of early Jewish history, its battles and interaction with God. The detail provided by Josephus is overwhelming at times. How he obtained so much detail on Moses for example, is remarkable. Josephus writing includes more details of our Creation than described in Genesis.
